Destiny - Let's Roll!

I got the game, loving it so far. You really need friends, to really enjoy it though. By the way anybody playing it on the PS3?

I'm enjoying it so far, but I am confused by one thing regarding the player's choice of race at the start.

I'm playing as an Awoken, but when my character goes out to meet them it she talks like she's an Earth native who's never met them before. Almost as if you weren't intended to be able to choose to be an Awoken.

Overall, while it's a good game the storytelling is definitely lacking compared to Bungie's earlier works.

So i've progressed now in the game up to the point where i've unlocked the story parts on Venus (seems like halfway through the game even if my character is at level 12 of 20 possible without doing all the endgame stuff to get past 20).

To be honest.. i expected more. Concerning all the hype i expected it to knock Halo out of the park and become the next big thing to surpass Halo as a game and as a popular knowledge (many have heard of Master Chief even if they have never played the games).

I don't see that happening yet in Destiny. Mind you.. it is a good game, technically flawless and there's tons to do but it all seems superficial.

For example.. you get your own Jumpship with which you can travel between the various locations and they all look very cool and are a bit pricey so it'll be a while before you can buy one to move past your stock ship. However it has absolutely no effect in the game.. there is nothing you can do with that ship other than look at it while the game loads a location. You can't fly it personally, much less engage in some space combat or upgrade it (which would be pointless anyway since there's nothing it does in the game).

The same goes for your ground vehicle which you can "summon" to get around quicker.. you can buy other versions but they also only get you from A to B faster.

The gameplay is fine and the story so far is ok but it lacks that certain spark. You can upgrade your character and weapons which is a nice touch but especially in the case of the weapons there's little point in getting attached to a particular weapon because they outdate fast as you level up and they fall behind in power so you are forced to use newer/higher level weapons to have a chance in the game.

What i really like though are the special parts in missions where the game won't save in between so you have to make it through in one go. This is thrilling because with each progressively harder enemy wave the stakes get raised. Die and you have to start this part from the beginning again (can be frustrating if you die near the end of the final wave but i like a challenge once in a while).

However much of the game seems to have been built on showing off to anybody who cares. There's tons of Logos, special uniform attachments and cosmetic upgrades that do look cool but are only designed to show off how "cool" and skilled you are. Maybe that appeals to teenagers or anybody else who feels the need to impress anybody but for me as an old fart (nearly 40) this part of the game feels totally uninteresting.

It is a very good game but i feel that it missed some big opportunities, especially given the rumored price tag it cost to develop making it the most expensive new game and i also believe the most expensive game ever so i somewhat expected something more unique.

I would love for it to be really open world and not just 4 huge worlds (Earth, Moon, Venus and Mars) that get loaded separately when you want to do missions on them. Gameplay is also nothing new.. go there, kill all the enemies and pickup stuff. Nothing revolutionary but then very few things nowadays are.

The Crucible game mode, the multiplayer shooter, is fun though but i have not unlocked all there is in this mode (and i suck at it but i still have fun).

So to sum it up.. Destiny is a good game but i expected something more and maybe more unique. It places too much importance on showing off to others by getting stuff that's purely cosmetic. Some game design choices that feel too familiar but then again it's hard to be truly innovative nowadays. Would recommend it to players but also tell them not to expect the game of all games as the hype made you believe.

I agree. If the game had a lot less hype, there wouldn't be as much disappointment with it as I've seen, as it is a good game. Normally I don't let myself buy into hype, but it worked this time. There really isn't anything special about it. It's an enjoyable game that I'll likely play to the end and likely buy the DLC for. But I've seen games with much less hype that stood out a lot more than Destiny, like Mass Effect and Borderlands.

Destiny Drinking Game (Don’t Try This At Home)

1. Drink every time your flying robot buddy has to scan something.

2. Chug if you have to fight off waves of enemies while your robot buddy is scanning.

3. Die of alcohol poisoning before you get off the Moon.

I'm so addicted to this game. I think about pretty much nothing else. It's kinda distracting. I almost cancelled a social event tonight just to play it. I didn't (slapped myself into sense), but... God, I wish I had.

Jesus.

You kid, but I think they have basically stealth-roped me into a WoW-like addiction. Nooooo......

First raid (VoG) is downed by Primeguard.

The only frustration for Primeguard was a complaint that’s been echoed elsewhere: a lack of loot. Though a few loot drops showed up during the extensive fighting, not a single person from either group earned anything meaningful when the completion screen for Vault of Glass showed up.

“All we got was a shader and a couple of high-level materials,” said Preu. “I don’t think either of our groups got any actual loot. I’m sure they’re going to fix that.”

As for the no loot situation, apparently the mission complete was bugged (surprise, surprise - what with Bungie apparently having to rush the raid content out and all).

Bungie apparently confirmed this and will mail them their loot.

Deathmatch (Clash-Team Deathmatch, and Rumble-Free for All) is fun, but you can definitely tell who sleeps with/makes love to their gamepads out there.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s too much like Halo.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s not enough like Halo.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s just “Halo the MMO”. Nobody wants Halo. Nobody wants MMOs.

The problem with Destiny is that there’s too much grinding.

The problem with Destiny is that there’s no grinding.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s too hard.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s too easy.

The problem with Destiny is that there’s no difference between the classes.

The problem with Destiny is that the [class] is O/P.

The problem with Destiny is that loot drops happen in menus instead of when you beat the boss and I just can’t.

The problem with Destiny is that everyone keeps dancing with me.

The problem with Destiny is that people keep trying to play with me.

The problem with Destiny is that you can’t play it solo.

The problem with Destiny is that you can play the whole story and even the Strikes solo.

The problem with Destiny is that Activision spent too much on marketing and nothing can live up to the hype.

The problem with Destiny is that “gamers” hate hubris, except when they don’t.

The problem with Destiny is that gamers buy into games before they launch instead of waiting for reviews.

The problem with Destiny is that reviewers suffer the effects of post-hype disappointment as much as anybody else.

The problem with Destiny is that reviewers are terrified of their readers.

The problem with Destiny is that there’s a Halo Easter Egg in it, and PlayStation scum shouldn’t even be able to SEE it, for fuck’s SAKE, hand me my GUN.

The problem with Destiny is that we’re so tired of mainstream video games, except when we aren’t.

The problem with Destiny is that the words “objectivity” and “subjectivity” are being thrown around like people really understood what they meant.

The problem with Destiny is that “objective standards to judge what makes a good video game” don’t exist.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s just a generic shooter.

The problem with Destiny is all the stuff that’s not shooting.

The problem with Destiny is that nobody is listening to me.

The problem with Destiny is that the enemy AI is so stupid.

The problem with Destiny is that the difficulty menu isn’t clearly explained.

The problem with Destiny is that I shouldn’t need to turn the difficulty up to find a challenge to match my skill level.

The problem with Destiny is that I shouldn’t need to turn the difficulty down to find a challenge to match my skill level.

The problem with Destiny is that the default difficulty setting shouldn’t match my skill level.

The problem with Destiny is that Bungie has built a shooter that never has to end, that never has to stop providing challenges.

The problem with Destiny is that it was built with such love, such love, and I can’t help loving it too.

The problem with Destiny is that shooters shouldn’t belong to everyone.

The problem with Destiny is that shooters belong to everyone.

The problem with Destiny is that the story is so boring.

The problem with Destiny is that the story is told in cutscenes.

The problem with Destiny is that the story is told in Grimoire cards and not cutscenes.

The problem with Destiny is that there is no story.

The problem with Destiny is that I didn’t listen to the story.

The problem with Destiny is that all the missions are just go here, go there, shoot this, collect that.

The problem with Destiny is that it pares gaming down to its essential loop, giving me immediate access to shooting and the loot cycle, and suddenly I’m having an existential crisis because I’ve realised that all mainstream video games are essentially the same experiences implemented to varying degrees of quality and wrapped in different aesthetics.

The problem with Destiny is that people like it, and I don’t like it, and they won’t stop talking about it and I’m bored.

The problem with Destiny is that people don’t like it as much as I do and they keep going out of their way to let me know.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s easier to be funny when you complain than to enjoy things.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s easier to highlight faults than celebrate successes.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s cooler to be negative.

The problem with Destiny is people who won’t hear any criticism of things they like are so tiresome.

The problem with Destiny is that it’s not perfect.

The problem with Destiny is that nothing is perfect.

The problem with Destiny is that we’re all going to die and sometimes when I wake up in the armpit of the night I think about how I spend the majority of my leisure hours and I feel sick to my stomach with all the things I didn’t do and the problems in the world I cannot overcome and it is so much easier to argue with some random angry Internet dude about the loot cycle than work on my tax debts.

The problem with Destiny is that I don’t have enough time to devote to it to be truly competitive.

The problem with Destiny is that I’m enjoying a mainstream shooter more than ever before.

The problem with Destiny is that everyone I know is playing it.

The problem with Destiny is that nobody I know is playing it.

The problem with Destiny is that I’m feeling excited about a mainstream video game.

The problem with Destiny is that a “cynical, paint-by numbers” approach to game design is often indistinguishable from a “really excellent” approach to game design if the people doing the designing are highly skilled and creatively nurtured.

The problem with Destiny is that I’ve run out of content.

The problem with Destiny is that the content is never-ending.

The problem with Destiny is that the mainstream games press don’t dictate anything.

The problem with Destiny is that the mainstream games press dictates everything.

The problem with Destiny is that reviews don’t mean anything.

The problem with Destiny is that almost nothing means anything and I don’t have the energy.

The problem with Destiny is video games.

The problem with Destiny is video games.
