Design software?

I've noticed on some Star Trek sites starships designed either by those that maintain the site or submissions sent to those sites for display on the internet.
What is the best software to use in designing starships on the computer?

I would think it comes down to personal preference more than anything else. There is no shortage of illustration applications, so it most likely comes down to a handful of factors:

• 1. Which apps are available on your current platform,
  2. which allows you to start being creative the quickest, and
  3. which fits into your budget.

Letting us know what platform you are using would make making suggestions easier. Otherwise you may get answers that aren't especially helpful (for example, I use Create, but unless you are using NEXTSTEP, OPENSTEP, Rhapsody or Mac OS X, this app is unavailable to you).
