Describe YOUR new Star Trek series.

I was thinking of something closer to a strike team dealing with kidnappings (both rescues and otherwise), assassinations, infiltrations and so forth. I guess you could say that they are similar to the Mission Impossible team (circa Martin Landau) crossed with a seal team. [No, I am not that old. My dad got the dvd set for christmas a couple of years back.]

SHOULD THE SERIES ACKNOWLEDGE THE RELAUNCH NOVELS? OR STAR TREK ONLINE?
Depends. If a particular event or whatever works to our advantage, we can canonise it -- if it doesn't we can ignore it. And we can put in some winks and nods. But that's about it.
If you use a character or a species or a specific situation out of a novel (or STO) then each time you do wouldn't you then have to write a check to the originating author?

Better still to just create your own additions to the Trek universe. Not use someone else's.

:)

STO and the relaunch novels contradict each other on a lot of key points anyway. I still think a Vanguard mini-series would be sweet, but in general I think something new would be better choice. I think we need further on screen universe development.

shortly after the destruction of Romulus -

A starship makes frequent sorties out of a Starbase hub on many humanitarian causes - helping with refugees, medical aid, transporting new colonies, etc. The Captain is well-seasoned and well-liked. His command is only equaled by his compassion. One of his most loyal officers is an old Dominion War veteran, wounded by a Jem'Hadar weapon he suffers both physically and mentally. The Captain centers him and the vet serves at ops (and tac officer) admirably. Others on board include:
* A young, inexperienced first officer. Rose through the ranks mostly through luck and charm.
* A Cultural Historian/diplomat (built loosely on aspects of Guinan and Phlox whose alien perspectives often echoed the human condition and episodes like City on the Edge of Forever and Things Past. Ultimately, the theme of this character would be that although pushing into the future, we must learn from history (which often will be our present).)
* Navigator. Enlisted because of his knowledge of the "corners of space". A "taxi driver" in a uniform.
* A Terrellian officer. Officially a diagnostic officer but she's a jack-of-all-trades. Does not feel much pity for Romulans since the Tal Shiar killed her husband. Her daughter is still missing.
* A Chief Engineer with an implant which ties her directly into the ship's computer (much like officer 0718 from Into Darkness).
* The ship's computer is Data, and is addressed as such

At the Starbase:
* Andorian admiral. Does his duty well but would rather be doing anything else than being a beaurocrat.
* On the other hand, flag officer is a Xindi Aquatic. Patient, measured but usually contradictory and his thinking is truly "alien" to human(oid) expectations.
* A young nurse, wife of the ship's first officer. Part of a very large medical staff.
* Alien confidant. Retrieved on a rescue mission. Lives in sickbay. Loves life. Has terminal illness. (will die by series end).
* a Robotic directory (CGI character). not sentient, but very snarky and opinionated for a sophisticated switchboard/rolodex. Painfully honest.

For 2/3rds of the first season its very much your standard Trek - voyaging, morality tales and the like. LOTS of emphasis on making the captain loved by the audience. Then disaster. the Captain is killed (permanently). The young first officer has to take over but is incredibly inept (at first). the Veteran ops officer, without his friend and captain to stabilize him, quickly loathes his new commander and lashes out. The stress of being suddenly promoted to Captain takes its toll on his marriage to the nurse at the Starbase. The Young Captain, living in the shadow of a missed officer, must prove himself after a very tumultuous start (his marriage never recovers).

I posted this a week ago at MZP:

ROGUE

A Star Trek spin-off set in the year 2376, only a few months after the end of the Dominion War. A war that left the Alpha Quadrant at the brink of total chaos.

ROGUE is about the crew of a small cargo ship named BULLET, recruited by Section 31 (a secretive branch within Starfleet Intelligence) to serve as a cover for clandestine operations outside Starfleet-controlled space. It is Section 31’s mission to secure Federation interests -by any means necessary.

The Ship
A small vessel, shaped like a bullet (hence the name). It was constructed by colonists on a farming planet near the Cardassian border, to transport plant seeds to sister colonies.
Maximum velocity Warp 5. No weapons. No shields, but good old fashioned polarized hull plating.
It has only one cargo hold. Instead of a bridge, there’s a cockpit with room only for 2. There are 4 cramped living quarters. The ship isn’t equipped with replicators, but it has a kitchen which also serves as a sickbay in case of a medical emergency.

The Crew

Dodge (fantasy casting: Channing Tatum)
Human. Early thirties. Athletic built. Adventurous in spirit. Always looking for the silver lining.

He was born and raised on a colony in the Demilitarized Zone. Against his father’s wishes (a farmer), he joined the I.T. (Intercolony Transport) as a pilot. His home world was handed over to the Cardassians by the Federation as part of a peace accord. He subsequently joined the Maquis, a group of colonists opposing the Cardassian rule of their planets.
When the Cardassian Union joined the Dominion, the Maquis were practically wiped out by the Jem’Hadar forces. Dogde fled the border colonies. In order to survive, he started to transport goods for criminal organizations like the Orion Syndicate.
A year ago, he was arrested by Starfleet Intelligence for shipping Kethracel White (a drug used by the Dominion to enslave their Jem’Hadar soldiers).
He was sentenced to death but saved from vaporization at the very last moment by agent Mendez, a Section 31 operative.
He is the ship’s captain, although he lets himself call “Boss”.

Brik (fantasy casting: Dylan Mcdermott)
Cardassian. Early fifties. Tuff, no-nonsense kind of guy. Has some problems with drugs and alcohol. Rather walks away from a fight than starting one. A loner.

He’s a former foot soldier in the Cardassian military. Never managing to climb the ranks, he was considered to be a failure by his family (his father being a decorated Legate).
He met Dodge during a Cardassian raid on Dodge’s village. They were both deadly wounded. The only way to survive was to help each other. The Cardassians believed him to be dead which was a positive outcome for Brik. It gave him the opportunity to escape his miserable life and spare his family from further embarrassment.
He’s the ship’s cook and nurse.

Landa (fantasy casting Rosamund Pike)
Andorian. Late twenties. Passionate. An artist. A fighter.

She was raised on Andor, a Federation core world. She entered the Andorian Academy for Arts as a promising talent. She joined a student movement, got politically involved -opposing the Cardassian-Federation peace treaty. Deciding not to stay on the sidelines any longer, she joined the Maquis. It turned her world upside down overnight, but she managed to overcome the hardships of her new life and found a place for herself in this new universe of hers.
She’s the ship’s mechanic, often called “Grease” by her fellow shipmates.

Mendez (Benicio Del Toro)
Human. Mid-forties. A man of mystery. No one even knows if Mendez is a real person. He could just be some kind of computer program.
He is the operative who recruited Dodge and his crew for Section 31. He communicates with the crew through a holographic projection installed in the ship’s bathroom -causing some strange meetings from time to time.

The Stories
No Starfleet crew to seek out new life and new civilizations. No technobabble. More fun and adventure. To see the Star Trek universe from a different, fresh perspective. More focus on the characters. Inject a bit of GotG into the mold.
Stories can range from infiltrating criminal organizations, saving Ambassadors, assassinations, Indiana Jones-like quests for sacred objects,… till saving the universe.

@JonVP
Wow, I like your Rogue series idea. It does resemble mine quite a bit, though it would appear to be significantly farther along the continuity than what I was thinking. I would love to sit down and bounce ideas with you sometime.

Thanks :). That sounds great.

If you use a character or a species or a specific situation out of a novel (or STO) then each time you do wouldn't you then have to write a check to the originating author?

From my understanding the answer is no. CBS owns everything whether author created or not. It's different than someone creating something in a TV series or movie.

As for a ship, I think that the Cheyenne class could be the successor to the Constellation class. The Constellation class has been described as a long duration exploration ship. But initially a problem plagued underachiever....that eventually became a work horse vessel.

* The ship's computer is Data, and is addressed as such

That reminds me of a chat I had with my friend just after Nemesis was released.

My understanding is that Brent Spiner wanted to give up the Data role because he felt that he was getting too old to play him (as an 'ageless' android).

We thought it would have been interesting if Data had somehow uploaded a copy of himself into the Enterprise computer ... then he could effectively be the voiceover for the ships computer in future films or TV series, and ultimately if Starfleet were to build a new android body, Data could be downloaded into that (and played by another actor).

But that's another discussion. :)

I would love to see the Kinshaya on screen. I have a feeling my visualization is WAY off, and I would like to be surprised!
I'm thinking there was a reason why the Klingons didn't conquer the Federation in the Prime timeline, even during the TOS Klingon/Romulan alliance.

Come to think of it, what was the purpose of the Klingon/Romulan alliance? Did the Kinshaya attack the Romulans too?

Several ideas, in chronological order:

"Gateway" - Set from 2273 onwards (so TMP uniforms galore), which sees a highly-classified Starfleet/civilian project to study and understand the first Iconia Gateway discovered. A catastrophic solar incident sees the team having to step through the Gateway into an unknown region of space in order to survive, where they face new struggles and marvels without the resources of Starfleet or even the luxury of knowing just where in the universe they are.

Sounds rather like the early seasons of Stargate SG-1. (Before the producers began to imitate Star Trek). Of course, Trek got there first.

I recall being intrigued by Andre Norton's Forerunners, when I read her novels many years ago.

I can imagine a Trek series with at least three canon Forerunners: Iconians; T'Kon Empire; Preservers.

I imagine a new sector of space being opened up for exploration. A number of planets with human societies deposited by the Preservers; human slave colonies left by the aliens from "The 37s" (Voyager), or the aliens in "North Star" (Enterprise).

Intriguing artifacts left behind by the Iconians and the T'kon, including Iconian gateways. (I can imagine a gateway going to Omega Centauri, which might count as intergalactic travel).

I can imagine a touch of the X Files-second encounter with the enigmatic aliens from "Silent Enemey" (Enterprise), who seemed to have a technological edge. Rumors of the almost mythical Kinshaya, described as "griffins."

I would also include a few civilian adventurers, a few con men, and a skamp or two. Followed by colonists.

Actually, what comes to mind is the Taurus Reach in the Vangard novels.

"Orion" - Set during the Dominion War onboard the Constellation-Class Orion, downgraded from the frontlines to act as an escort/supply/medical/courier ship. It is filled with a motely crew who aren't the best and brightest, who have issues and problems on other ships, so they are dumped on this bucket of bolts as a way to make them useful in some small capacity.
I like the idea of the Hero Ship being a bucket of bolts. I can even imagine an old beater ship being used for exploration, with Star Fleet being drained/devastated by the end of the Dominion War.

What the heck, I'll post it here too

An expansion on my NuTNG idea that CorporalCaptain nicknamed "Deep Space Voyager the Next Generation" A multi POV and wide ranging epic in the mold of Game of Thrones.

The Setting: The Bajoran Sector (and beyond). Situated at the edge of "Known Space", the sector has been in turmoil for decades due an on going insurrection centered on Bajor, Once under the control of the Cardassian Union the Bajorans have finally thrown off the yoke of Cardassian rule.

  • Deep Space Nine- Formerly an orbital Cardassian ore processing station, the Bajoran Provisional Government has turned it over to Starfleet to serve as the base of operations for the defense and exploration of the Bajor Sector and beyond. In addition to Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia, there is a large civilian population on the station that includes Bajorans, Starfleet dependents and other foreign nationals.
    • Commodore Benjamin Sisko- Starfleet Commander for the Bajoran Sector. Sisko is veteran of the Cardassian Wars. His wife, Jennifer and son, Jake live with him on DS9, but he has misgivings about them being so close to the Cardassian border.
    • Lt. Commander Tuvok- Starfleet Intelligence. Tuvok oversees various on ongoing SI operations in the sector. Some of which might be above Sisko's "pay grade".
    • Commander Katherine Pulaski- Chief Medical Officer. A veteran officer with strong opinions, she's often a thorn in the side of Sisko and his unofficial conscience. She's also fond of needling Tuvok and has a low opinion of "spies".
    • Lt. .Commander Data- Chief Operations Officer. An android. Data is in charge of keeping the station running. Given its blend of Federation. Cardassian and Bajoran technology it a task that keeps Data busy around the clock. Not needing sleep he is well suited for the task. As an android wishing to become more "human" Tuvok finds him fascinating.
    • Colonel Kira Nerys- Bajoran Liaison Officer. Kira was a member of the Bajoran Resistance during the Cardassian Occupation. She is still wanted in the Cardassian Union for terrorism. She coordinates activities that involve Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia.
    • Constable Odo- Chief of Law Enforcement for the station. A shapeshifter of unknown origin, Odo was raised on the station by Bajorans. He is strongly attached to the station and sees it as his only home. While nominally in charge of civilian law enforcement, Sisko likes to use Odo for Starfleet related operations as well.
    • Quark- A Ferengi merchant who runs a casino on DS9's promenade. He is also heavily involved in various criminal activities in the sector. As such, he and Odo have an adversarial relationship.
    • Garek- A Cardassian tailor who runs a shop on the promenade. He is the only Cardassian still on the station. His reasons for staying are currently a mystery. Though Tuvok certainly has a few ideas.
    • Dukat - A Gul in the Cardassian military. Dukat is the former Prefect of Bajor and presided over the transition from the Cardassian Union to the Bajoran Provisional Government. Currently he is the military commander for the Cardassian territory adjacent to the Bajor Sector. He would very much like to be Prefect of Bajor again.

The USS Enterprise- A Galaxy class vessel, the Enterprise is the newest and most advanced ship in Starfleet. It's primary mission is establishing diplomatic relations with the new worlds beyond Bajor. It's staff includes a large diplomatic team.
    • Captain Jean-Luc Picard- The ship's Commanding Officer. Picard is a man weary of war. The prospect of commanding a mission of exploration and diplomacy has kept him Starfleet. He sees a new war on the horizon and is making every effort to change course.
    • Lt. Commander Chakotay- The ship's Executive Officer. Chakotay's homeworld was on the frontlines of the Cardassian Wars and now lies in Cardassian territory. He's not happy being a ship who's main objective is to "make nice" with the Cardassians.
    • Ambassador Deanna Troi- The sector's Chief Diplomatic Officer, she divides her time between DS9 and the Enterprise. As a civilian, she's not always greeted with open arms by Starfleet. Her goals are often at odds with Commodore Sisko's, the sector's military commander. Picard is more open minded and she prefers the Enterprise to DS9
    • Lt. B'Elanna Torres- The ship's Chief Engineering Officer. She served with Chakotay in the Cardassian Wars and shares his views on making peace with them.
    • Lt. Commander Beverly Crusher - The ship's Chief Medical Officer. The widow of Jack Crusher, Picard's former XO and closest friend. Her son is in Starfleet and she worries about his future.
    • Ensign Ro Laren- The ship's Flight Control Officer. Born in a Bajoran refugee camp she's never been to Bajor before this assignment. She's at odds with native born Bajorans, who see the refugees as cowards who fled rather than fight.

The USS Defiant- A Defiant class light cruiser. Its primary mission is defense of the station and the Bajor system. It serves as the flagship for the commander of DS9.The Defiant is a warship, part of the legacy of the Cardassian Wars. It's crew is small and most are experienced combat officers.
    • Commander William T. Riker- The Defiant's Commanding Officer. Riker comes across as a genial sort, quick with a joke and a twinkle in his eye. He's also known to have an eye for the ladies. In a combat situation he's all business, though. A clever commander with a trick or two up his sleeve.
    • Lt. Commander Elizabeth Shelby- The ship's Executive Officer. She's all business, all the time and isn't afraid to speak her mind if she thinks Riker ( or anyone else) is wrong. She has high standards and if she had her way the crew would be drilling around the clock.
    • Lt. Worf- The ship's tactical officer. On a ship the size of the Defiant, tactical includes flight control. He respects Riker and admires Shelby.
    • EMH-. Experimental Medical Hologram. A new technology currently being tested on the Defiant. It's inventor, Dr. Louis Zimmerman is on board overseeing the test. (or is he)
    • Lt. Ezri Tigan- Medical Officer. Tigan is Combat Field Medic and provides backup for the EMH. An unjoined Trill, who's not on the candidate list, she lives life to the fullest.
    • Lt. Geordi La Forge- The ship's Chief Engineering Officer. Blinded in the Cardassian Wars,LaForge can interface with the ship's systems through his VISOR, the device that enables him to see. As such he feels and senses what the ship does. At times this seems to cut him off from his crewmates and he wonders if he is losing his humanity.
    • Ensign Harry Kim- Operations Officer. A rookie right out of the academy he's in awe of these "heroes".

The USS Voyager- An Intrepid class scout ship. It primary mission is science and exploration. Most of its crew are in the Science division and the rest is comprised of young officers, some just out of the Academy. Because of this, the ship has been nicknamed "The School Bus". Voyager spends most of its time away from the Bajor Sector in explored territory.
    • Commander Kathryn Janeway- The ship's Commanding Officer. Formerly in the Science Division, this is Janeway's first command. For her the thrill of the "hunt" is what drives her. She needs to know what's behind the next nebula and beyond the farthest star.
    • Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax- The ship's Executive Officer and Chief Science Officer. A joined Trill, Dax can call upon decades of experience from her previous hosts. Which is at odds with her youthful appearance. A close friend of Sisko in her previous host, he still calls her "The Old Man". A name that followed her to Voyager.
    • Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien- The ship's Chief Engineer. The real old man aboard the ship, he has a decade on most of the crew. A veteran of the Cardassian Wars, He's one of Janeway's trusted advisors and a father figure to the younger crewmen. (Just don't tell him that). His wife, Keiko, lives on DS9.
    • Lt. Julian Bashir- The ship's Chief Medical Officer. Young, inexperienced and on his first deep space mission, Bashir is out of his element and tries to cover it up with bravdo. O'Brien has taken him under his wing.
    • Ensign Wesley Crusher- Operations Officer. A gifted young man, Crusher competed Starfleet Academy in record time. He's the youngest member of the crew and very aware of this As such he over eager to prove himself. His mother is the CMO on the Enterprise,
    • Lt. Tasha Yar- The Ship's Chief Security Officer. Growing up as an orphan on failed colony where every day was a fight for survival, Yar feels out of place on a ship full of scientists and overachievers.
    • Lt. Tom Paris- Flight Control Officer. Paris is onboard the Voyager as a favor to Admiral Owen Paris, Janeway's former CO. Paris has been a disciplinary problem (and embarrassment to his father) in the past. Voyager is his "last chance".

I don't really care alot the makeup of the crew, how cool the ship looks, or explosions, I want stories that challenge my way of thinking, make me uncomfortable, force me to look at the white hot center of all the societal elephants in the room and then show me that if we choose to, we can rise above these things.
