And so we get the next sci-fi book to get put on screen.

Having left an indelible imprint on Arrakis with his acclaimed adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune,” Denis Villeneuve will journey deeper into the science fiction canon.

Alcon Entertainment, which previously partnered with Villeneuve on “Prisoners” and “Blade Runner 2049,” has acquired the film rights to Arthur C. Clarke’s classic sci-fi novel “Rendezvous With Rama” for their frequent collaborator to direct.

The novel had previously been controlled by Morgan Freeman and his partner Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment, which will produce along with Alcon.

this could be really good. i need to reread this. it has been many years. I think I still have it on a shelf, somewhere.

Well I guess between this one and Dune Part II his dance card is filled for the next few years.

And Messiah after that. Rama is supposed to be his break between Dune 2 & Messiah (assuming Messiah gets made).

He also has at least two episodes of The Sisterhood that he's booked to direct, along with his EP duties on it. If it ever gets made.

I saw this news last week and I'm super excited! I think he's the perfect person to direct this novel.

It would have great timing if Rendezvous with Rama had been made four years ago and released when Oumuamua was detected. That would have been fantastic publicity. I think the CGI would have been up to it then. I do wonder if the action and characters would need to be spiced up though to keep audiences entertained. The Ramans never appear in the novel and information about them is merely teased.

I've been wishing for a movie adaptation of this book for years. Now CGI is finally at a point where it would look convincing without necessarily costing the earth to make. There are a number of sequels, as well.

I don't know what Ouamuamua - with an extra 'a' - is. But then I don't know what Oumuamua is either. It did seem to experience non-gravitational acceleration. If the Ramans do things in threes, we'd be due two more.

Big Dumb Object visits Earth and people walk through it. It's going to have to have a punched up script.

That's why Villeneuve has been hired--he took Story of Your Life and turned it into Arrival. He made Dune into a pretty faithful adaptation that was also engaging. Been a long time since I've read the Rama books, but I am wondering if the movie will include some elements from the sequels as well.

Like many Clarke books, it's big on ideas and light on plot. I don't expect a purely faithful adaptation.

There was a computer adventure game adaptation back in the 90s that I played. It didn't seem very exciting as far as I recall.
The interaction with the Ramans' housekeeping cybernetic organisms wasn't enthralling and the dramatic tension with defeating the attempt of those humans who wanted to destroy the cylinder also wasn't gripping. I don't think the cliff jump from the book was in it.

Literally no one cares (well, except James Cameron.)

You know, I'd be inclined to agree, except that I said the same thing about the first Avatar. And Titanic for that matter.

I don't think you can ever count James Cameron out.

For what it's worth, sites like IMDB & Rotten Tomatoes are listing it as one of the most anticipated films of 2022 based on user data.
