Deltan or Android?

Haven't seen this discussed yet, and I'm curious about the bald blue-shirted bridge crewman and if anyone knows what he is? Ostensibly, throughout the movie, he resembled a Deltan with some different eye coloration. Not a biggie, as Abrams went for a slightly modified look to the Klingons which included an eye color change.

But then, there was an intentional close-up of the back of the guy's head with something that resembles Neo's Matrix interface, but all lit up and blinky, followed by a HEAVILY modulated and distorted voice. Then I thought, is this guy a Soong-style android or some other artificial being? Does anyone know any background on this character? I was quite surprised by that scene - totally insignificant in the grand scheme of things like the appearances of other unknown/unnamed aliens, but still very interesting.
 
Every time I heard him talk, he reminded me of the helmsman on the Fhloston Paradise cruise ship in The Fifth Element. You know, the guy behind the wheel that says "Helm to 108".

I wouldn't be surprised if he was an android. Although it would be nice if he was Deltan, since that race has not been discussed much since Ilia in TMP.

"Every time"? I only recall him speaking once. Did he have more than one line?
 
Maybe it's Soong who built 0718. In 2259, Soong would be roughly in his late teens/early 20's. That may have been his first project. And with the advanced tech in the Abramsverse, I'm sure Soong could get started even earlier than he did in the original timeline.

Although the actor who played 0718 says that he's an augmented human. FWIW.

Perhaps he's the new timeline's analog of Norman, since they've already had an off-screen "Mudd Incident"?

You didn't notice the bald female navigator who replaces Chekov?

The cast list calls her Darwin, but do we know she's not Deltan?
 
I thought one of the captains at the breifing that Harrison shoots up was a Deltan but he might just be bald.

I'm going with augmented Human as well. Perhaps in this timeline Starfleet is experimenting more with cybernetics and humans directly interfaced with the ship's systems. I think it's a pretty cool idea and shows a more modern view of the 23rd century.
 
Isn't it somewhat strange that in a movie where the bad guy and his sort are augmented biologically, and that's considered a bad thing, that you have a guy who's augmented technologically, but that's just fine? There was definitely room for some parallels to be drawn there at least.
 
If he's from a member world on which this is common, I don't think Starfleet would exclude them from being officers just because on Earth it's icky.
