I like that picture, but here is a couple of questions.
A. What's the background of this little skirmish?
B. What is the name of D-4?
Background as in why are they fighting?
Ah, you know I'm a fan, deg. Excellent work, as always. And reference from John Eaves himself, no less. I'd like to see some of your concept stuff on this – I always enjoy seeing the process. Great stuff!
So the time frame would be either 2266 or 2267?

Thanks, my friend! John's a good friend (and a nut-bar himself), and über-talented (IMO), so I enjoy building his designs any time. And while I really dig Koji and Rob's production build of her, I really wanted to pour the deg-attention-to-detail into John's awesome design for myself, and Johnny (he loves her, BTW).
As to the shot's process, there is an verbal account of it on my Drex Files close-up, but as far as showing anything, the lead-up submissions were just rough renders for position, nothing to see render-wise. I have two or three or four of them, and one of them I did flesh out and post so far.
So the time frame would be either 2266 or 2267?
I would not get too caught up in those type of details with my TOS.5 Universe, my friend, as far as trying to compare it in a perfect linear fashion to the TOS Universe. It'll just twist you up with inconsistencies worst than Trek already does.
Given my “.5” designation, I did see my universe as sorta between TOS and TMP. But then again, maybe the .5 is just a indicator that this is an alt universe and this is just what E looked like all along up until the refit.
And then there's the proto D4. That would be either; A.) a relic cruising around (like an ol' maintained hot-rod), B.) a time misplaced ship, or C.) just how things are in deg's TOS.5 Universe.
Like I said, I don't get too caught up in the make-believe detail of Trek as is, so I don't do it with my interpretation of my TOS.5 Universe either. It's more about creating compelling imagery (or just pretty pictures) for me than it is sticking to established canon-based facts details and time-lines (which are always shifting themselves anywho).
You are welcome to try and fit it in time-wise if you like, but like I said, it will never really fit. If I had to make a call as such, with the .5 designating an implied mark in time-flow, with Kirk having taken command in 2264 (and TOS.5 E being a prior refit herself) and the TMP refit coming into being the mid-2270s, I would say my TOS.5 E gal's refit took place around 2269, just after finishing the original “five year mission” (if I have my dates straight).
That date-based interpretation aside; I think of her really as being in an alt universe, and she always looked like this up until the refit, as my art often depicts things happening that never happened the way they went down in the TOS Universe.
Whatever be the “truth,” thanks for the interest in my work/TOS.5 Universe. eh.

Oh, I figure given the war tension during 2266 to 2267 period that ended with the Treaty of Organia.
I had always considered your version of the Enterprise as the version after she was refit before Kirk took her over, and lasting until TMP...perfectly consistent with the REAL Star Trek universe, had they had the time and money to make her look this way. It's great art, and I hope to see more of this ship!
And OMG, Brent Spiner is frakin' hilarious! He could do stand-up no prob and C and I told him we'd be there if he ever did. He's a complete unbridled zany goof-ball and super sincere (even though he (comically) claims not to have a single sincere bone in his body), and super laid-back and approachable. I love all those qualities in a person.
