Defining Pop Songs of the Decade

Of those songs, I see only Outkast, Katy Perry and maybe Lady Gaga still being played in clubs and bars in 3 years' time.

I find it very difficult to wonder what hits of this decade will dislodge the classics of the 80s and 90s from the playlists in general.

^^ The classics of the 80s and 90s that end up dislodged from Radio 2 will no doubt resurface on some new specialist 80s and 90s internet radio station, as always. :bolian:

For those interested (both of you ;)) there are these interesting mashups of the Billboard 100's top 25 of the year from 2007 and 2008, which kind of capture the flavour of the most popular chart pop music from those years. Well, they did for me, your mileage may vary:

United State of Pop 2007

United State of Pop 2008

:bolian:

The second one's better because there's a concise list of songs you can refer to. The first one was just a chaotic mix of 3 second clips of all the songs.

Both mashups were by the same artist, DJ Earworm. The first one with its original video is also available on DJ Earworm's YouTube page, complete with song listings, but I prefer this fan's effort at a tribute video myself. :)

I also happen to loathe rap, hip-hop, etc... and thus, even modern pop is damaged goods for me. Metal and fruity lounge jazz being the other genres I can't listen to. I wish people could sing a straight love song once in a while without all the diva scales and hip-hop r&b vocals (I'm an oldies ballad lover).
I guess if you dislike hip-hop generally (and I like very little of it myself, really) modern pop music won't have much appeal to you. Hip-hop has infiltrated so thoroughly that it's pretty inescapable (a rapper seems to turn up on almost every American smash hit now).

The diva/RnB vocal style is called "melisma" and I consider it one of the worst blights on music today. A lot of young people now seem to think that it's the only thing that qualifies as "good singing", which is pretty depressing. There's more emphasis on "vocal ability" than any distinct personality in one's voice.

Well, that's just in pop music. Thankfully, in rock music, there's still a good degree of variety.

That warbling bullshit really annoys me too.

One of the worst examples I have heard is that british talent show winner's cover of Hallelujah, and you are right, she warbles all over it purely to cover up the fact that her voice is utterly bland and generic by comparison to the few other people most famous for recording that song.

00s - "Breathe" by Faith Hill, "Lady Marmalade" from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne, "Alcohol" by Brad Paisley, "In The End" by Linkin Park, "Hey Ya!" by Outkast, "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera, "This Love" by Maroon 5, "Bring Me To Life" by Evanescence, "Because of You" by Kelly Clarkson, "Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day, "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt, "Not Ready To Make Nice" by the Dixie Chicks, "Clocks" by Coldplay, "Ticks" by Brad Paisley, "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley, "Whenever, Wherever" by Shakira, "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry, "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood, "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" by Panic! At The Disco, "Hey There Delilah" by Plain White T's, "Umbrella" by Rihanna, "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" by Soulja Boy Tell'em, "Butterfly" by Crazy Town, "Drops of Jupiter" by Train, "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem, "Du Hast" by Ramstein, "Love Story" by Taylor Swift, "Youth of the Nation" by POD, "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley

I think that this is a perfect list. There are probably others could be added as well, such as a Blink 182 song.

My god has pop music been atrocious this decade.

That said I find that "Poker Face" song strangely catchy in a way I don't completely understand. :(

I don't find myself agreeing, entirely. Though I have problems with some strands of modern pop (see my post above), on the other hand I like a lot of Timbaland and Neptunes production, as well as some of Xenomania's output (Girls Aloud in particular). It has a lot of problems, but I wouldn't put mid-to-late 00s pop quite on the samel level as the utter naffness of the late 90s. That time in my mind was the true nadir of pop music.

Poker Face's saving grace is that Faith No More played a bit of it on their comeback tour the other night and Mike Patton made it hilarious. And I would also take Girls Aloud over anything popular from the late 90s, not to mention all that garage rock, indie rock and hip hop that's plagued this decade.

God damn! I did not know FNM were playing Brixton academy on their comeback

When they announced the comeback they made a big fuss about how Download was the only UK gig they were doing, I would totally have gone had I known :(

Luckily I've already seen them on the Angel Dust tour, hopefully there will be another chance, with any luck an album and full world tour will be forthcoming.

Well there's pro-shot footage of the entire Download set on youtube and the majority of the Brixton one on amateur-cam as well. They are absolutely amazing, and threw in some brilliant covers as well.

^ I found a divx of the Download gig, it's amazing. I'm just watching it now, so good to see them in action again. Great set.

How can you do this list without listing "Holla Back" girl that other song. My Milkshake bring the boys to my yard" or something like that. Also what the Snoop Dog song were he says Mo shizzle my fizzle or something along those lines.
