Define a hardcore fan...

I personally would add anyone who regularly uses the term "Gene's Vision" when discussing what he doesn't like about any particular iteration of Trek.

Oh, gods yes! Couldn't agree more.

Hardcore fan? Has every stitch of Star Trek on DVD, has more than one Trek costume/uniform hanging in their closet, owns a "working" tricorder/communicator/phaser, is a virtual encyclopedia of Trek trivia, and...

...HATES anyone who holds an opinion about Star Trek different from their own, including those who create Star Trek...

^^ Is there a distinction betwen "hardcore" and "obsessive" or are they same thing?

One could be intensely interested in a subject without sacrificing due attention to other important aspects of your life such as work, family, friends and obligations. Or does hardcore mean that your interest is impacting on other aspects of your life?

Important distinction to make.

A hardcore fan was interested in seeing those first pictures of the new Enterprise for the upcoming movie.

An obsessive fan immediately started bitching about how the font on the hull markings was all wrong, and the markings are too far from the rim of the saucer section, and this means that JJ Abrams has no respect for the fans, and this is just a reboot, and a slap in the fact to kept fandom that kept ST alive in the 1970's, ad nauseum...

Hardcore Fan: Thought Shatner's "Get a Life" skit on SNL was funny.

Obsessive Fan: Thouhgt Shatner's "Get a Life" skit on SNL was a slap in the face to fandom who kept ST alive all through the 1970's, blah, blah, blah... ...and doesn't understand why Captain Kirk doesn't like him anymore.

Awsome. Just awsome.

I personally would add anyone who regularly uses the term "Gene's Vision" when discussing what he doesn't like about any particular iteration of Trek.

Someone who has seen every episode more than ten times.

Someone who has every single episode on DVD.

Someone who goes to every convention there is.

Someone who has purchased several if not all toys and models available.

Someone who regularly posts on message boards associated with the show.

Someone who knows the answer to any question regarding the show.

Not all necessary, but definitely sufficient.

Is it kind of sad when you judge people by their level of fandom? Should a hardcore trekkers opinion matter more than a regular trekkers?

^^ I confess that this thread idea came out of another thread in the TOS forum where it was being debated whether Trek XI should or shouldn't make an effort to appeal to "hardcore" fans. My position was that while Trek XI could be a sort of restart and most likely a reimagining that is rather loosely based on TOS' continuity in trying to draw a new audience it could also include aspects that still resonate with established fans.

One could still be dedicated to TOS and yet be realistic enough to say, "Hey, I can be flexible because this isn't supposed to be the same thing as the original." Much in the same way Batman Begins, Spider-Man the Bourne films, and Casino Royale are adaptations of the original source materiel.

"Obsessive" would be stubbornly insisting the new work adhere religiously to trhe original even when that really isn't viable anymore.
