Define a hardcore fan...

In this case we're talking about Trek fans, but it could apply to anything of interest.

How would you define a "hardcore" fan?

Someone who has seen every episode more than ten times.

Someone who has every single episode on DVD.

Someone who goes to every convention there is.

Someone who has purchased several if not all toys and models available.

Someone who regularly posts on message boards associated with the show.

Someone who knows the answer to any question regarding the show.

Lets see I own half the series on DVD, Ive seen them multiple times. I dont go to conventions however because I dont like crowds. I have the gold/silver plated Tri-Dimensional chess set, I post regularly on the boards and I'm not the best but concider myself to be okay at answering questions.

I meet half the standards I guess.

Depends. I have seen all the episodes so many times, yet I don't go to conventions, read all the technical jargon etc.

Also some folk on here go into things in such great detail it does boggle the mind and makes the term "geek" pale into insignificance

Each to ther own though, we all love Trek in our own way

Hardcore? An individual who meets all your criteria needs to seek professional help?

I've loved TOS since discovering it in 1970. I like some of the films (in varying degree). I've liked some of the stuff on the spin-off series. I've read a lot of novels and comics until several years ago. I've been to perhaps ten conventions over the years. I've written and read fanfic and I've purchased selected merchandise over the years. I have a number of Trek related pursuits.

But I have many other interests besides Trek. I'm a die hard Star Trek TOS fan, but I don't know if I'd define myself as "hardcore." I've never been in costume and it doesn't preoccupy my thinking and life.

I'd define "hardcore fan" as someone who lives and breathes Trek to the near total exlusion of anything else.

I think the term "hardcore" does carry a measure of negative connotation to it. But in fairness a near exclusive interest or even obsession with a subject needn't be a real problem as long as it doesn't adversely effect other parts of your life.

^^ Is there a distinction betwen "hardcore" and "obsessive" or are they same thing?

One could be intensely interested in a subject without sacrificing due attention to other important aspects of your life such as work, family, friends and obligations. Or does hardcore mean that your interest is impacting on other aspects of your life?

A *Hardcore* fans owns at least one of the series in its entirety. Beyond that, there are several levels of *Hardcore* I'd say...

Someone who goes to work dresses up in a costume to go to work.

A woman reported for jury duty in a Star Trek uniform. Is that hardcore enough for ya? lol (by the way, she wasn't chosen to sit on the jury)

A hardcore fan is one who has at least one attribute that demonstrates intense interest in the property and will remain interested in the absence of major media attention. They are the opposite of fair-weather fans.

Important distinction to make.

A hardcore fan was interested in seeing those first pictures of the new Enterprise for the upcoming movie.

An obsessive fan immediately started bitching about how the font on the hull markings was all wrong, and the markings are too far from the rim of the saucer section, and this means that JJ Abrams has no respect for the fans, and this is just a reboot, and a slap in the fact to kept fandom that kept ST alive in the 1970's, ad nauseum...

Hardcore Fan: Thought Shatner's "Get a Life" skit on SNL was funny.

Obsessive Fan: Thouhgt Shatner's "Get a Life" skit on SNL was a slap in the face to fandom who kept ST alive all through the 1970's, blah, blah, blah... ...and doesn't understand why Captain Kirk doesn't like him anymore.

Awesome. And spot on. I was of course very interested in seeing the new Enterprise pics. Some on here though went waaaay to far in analysing the whole thing such as markings, colours etc. And as for the theories on the 4 cameras.....

Awsome. Just awsome.

I personally would add anyone who regularly uses the term "Gene's Vision" when discussing what he doesn't like about any particular iteration of Trek.

I'm rather dedicated to TOS, but I can't say I feel threatened by Trek XI particularly if it's a re-imagining. I can get pissed if it's insisted that Trek XI is the way things were always supposed to be. In fact whether TPTB are upfront about it or not it just makes more sense to accept Trek XI as an alternative continuity and restart rather than trying to force-fit it with a forty year old series.

I think you can be a dedicated or "hardcore" fan without being obsessive to the point of irrationality.

Of course different people will define "irrational" to varying degrees.
