Defiant's 1st Rodeo

Your Opinion of the first encounter between the Defiant and Jem Hadar

I went for the first option. Frankly, the fact that the ship was mostly new yet malfunctioning (thereby accelerating its defeat?) was a pretty neat plot point not common in Trek. When jerry-rigged devices are improvised, they almost always work in TNG and VOY. But we get a ship that's been tested and retested and messes up when they need it the most (and not treated comically like Star Trek V) was so frustrating for the viewer, and oh so good for the story.

I went for the first option. Defiant was small and had a lot of problems from the start, and the Dominion technology was still effective at seeing through the cloak, which was really her key advantage.

I, too, went with the first option. I remember wanting the ship to do much better, but it was realistic that they just weren't as kick-ass as they thought they were. It made for a real sense of danger in that the Dominion were even more dangerous than initially thought.

1st option, as mentioned above, O'Brien had had very little time to work on a ship with many problems, they still managed a good battle.

i went with the second option, because in the damaged state they were in, plus being out numbered, and the fact that the galaxy class starship got destroyed, the Defiant shold have been utterly demolished...

I didn't go for the second option as by this time the Dominion had already stated their intent and had frightened the Federation by suicide-ramming and destroying the USS Odyssey, and didn't have to prove their point again lest they risk all-out war, which tactically was too premature in their plan to feel their way into the Alpha Quadrant.

Nor did I go for the third option as it was as much as could be expected for an experimental ship banged together in order to fight the Borg, and now having to cope with this new menace.

For its brave performance against overwhelming odds, and with powerful but poorly managed equipment, I went for the first option.

What was your opine about Defiant's 1st combat in The Search?

In one of my many careers I used to be a TRUCK DRIVER. I did it for nearly five years. And once a year, her in California, they have truck rodeos. This is where truck drivers bring their own private trucks, big rigs mind you, and compete in various contests. Did I ever compete? HELL NO!! If I could keep my rig from running over Volkswagons, I was happy!!

option 1. To an extent option 2 but with the Jem'hadar taking out a Galaxy class I think we all got the idea. As for Defiant - a valiant fight out up with lots of hurdles to over come. Some success and some failures. So overall realistic especially for Trek where ship is part hero of the story each week.

I voted for option 1. I discounted option 2 under the principle that the Dominion did not want to destroy the ship. Let's face it the Defiant at that stage was only marginally more prepared for active duty then the Enterprise-B was at the start of Generations so I wasn't disappointed in her performance.
