Defiant-class starships in peacetime

what do you think happened to all Defiant-class starships after the Dominion War ended?

what roles would starfleet have for warships in a time of peace?

The original purpose of the Defiant class, I believe, was to have a small fleet on standby in case of Borg attack.

I'd speculate that Star Fleet would not mass produce them. Quite apart from the apparent difficulty of constructing them, they don't fit in with the multi purpose vessel philosophy the Fleet usually goes by. So a small number would be built in case the need for them arose.

In all probability they'd be kept operational and moved to new locations as needed.

If Starfleet's feeling logical, they'd probably assign medium-sized fleets of Defiants as permanent defense fleets for Federation Member worlds. So there'd be a fleet of, say, 20 Defiant-class starships in permanent orbit of Earth, Vulcan, Andor, Tellar, Cestus, Deneva, Betazed, Benzar, Bolarus, Alonis, Antede, Zakdorn, Zalda, Ardana, etc.

yeah they need to mass produce the Defiant class (it's small size is great for the fleet yards) so they can build defence fleets prepared for enemy incursions. the Defiant class is ideal for short range operations.

20 to each planet??

20 to each planet isn't excessive.

20 defiant class starships I'd say were equivalent to say up to 10 Galaxy class/ Nebula class/ Sovereign class capital ships.

so to defend each core world of the Federation the numbers are quite small.

Considering how often Federation planets get targeted for destruction, I don't think that's an excessive number at all. If anything, I'd find it a bit conservative!

The Defiant wasn't exactly alone in it's more battle-oriented role and design: The Sovereign, Akira, Norway, Sabre and Steamrunner class vessels were all designed post Wolf-359 for more combat oriented roles for the future in case of further Borg attacks or otherwise. The Defiant was the first one completed, hence "Starfleet's first warship" but was quickly followed by other combat vessels.

I'd say they can all be fitted for non-combat duties, including the Defiant. But they may not need to mass-produce the Defiant class ships since they were already making many other types for similar reasons.

That's completely inefficient. Its not like they don't have sensors or warning signs. There's no point in having huge armads protect federation worlds that lie far from any border and therefore any threat, ships are needed to patrol borders where threats might arise.

what happens if a Borg transwarp conduit opens up? or a Romulan fleet de-cloaks near a major planet?

No need to spread them like that. Just put those 280 Defiants in Earth-orbit, and you're well-protected from most villains.

Well, Romulan cloaks can be detected nowadays and they have anti-cloak detection devices set up so probably more important worlds have them.

Transwarp Conduits are a major problem, but it seems the Borg don't use them for ambushes that much.

Pardon me, but how often has the Earth been targeted for destruction and the Enterprise been the only ship within range?

Whenever the Enterprise is in a sector or even a quadrant most other ships know to vacate since they KNOW they're destined cannon fodder.
