December Writing Challenge: A Single Act

Gentle readers,

This is an entry for the December 2009 writing challenge, set in the time of TOS. It concerns a new hero of the Enterprise crew, one of many under Jim Kirk's command. His name is Lieutenant John "Mack" King.

It's title: Never Forget: < http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=109954 >

If you read the other two installments in the series entitled "It Is A Significant Assignment", you will find this short story has some significant information about our subject, in slightly less than 3000 words.

It is somewhat out of order, the last part of the second story about Mack is not posted, but will be shortly. It is near the end of the second story that this fits.

Please note that it is a sad tale, with a glimmer of hope in it, sadly a lot of the glimmer was left on the floor of the editing room. There is one cuss word in it that is dislike, but please allow a little grace for it.

Here are the other parts of the story, It is a Significant Assignment:

Part One: http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=107800
Part Two: More Cleaning to Do: http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=108432

Acknowledgments follow on the second post. My Word count from Microsoft Word is 2998.

Thanks for Reading, and comments are welcome!

Ooooh. I might try and throw something short together for this challenge - would be interesting to play with a really screwed up near-future for the Federation.

History can be altered by a single act. Turn left instead of right. Hit the snooze once instead of twice. The ultimate question human beings asked themselves is what if?

The challenge for this month is a particular "what if."

What if the Defiant failed to wipe out the Dominion fleet in the wormhole with the help of the prophets. Sisko did the valiant thing, fired everything he had and took out about twenty warships before being blown to bits.

The rest of the 2,800 Jem'Hadar ships came pouring out of the wormhole.... then what happened? Ten minutes later or 40 years later?

3,000 word limit, deadline is midnight December 31,2009. Good luck!

So we are to take this particular scenario but can focus on anything we want, and make the resulting timeline whatever we want? I'm contemplating entering this contest but I'm not as well versed as most of you are. Just want to make sure I'm getting the rules of the challenge correct.

[sigh]

I wipe egg off my face, sit down at my keyboard, and say: "Sorry, I misunderstood the prompt. I thought the Sisko wormhole deal was an example of what was wanted in the contest, not the prompt itself. My apologies for showing such ignorance and failure to read English at some level above 3rd grade.

Now please excuse me while I shower, change clothes, and delete all the above posts I worte in the thread." [/sigh]

I understand your confusion. The way the OP was written was less than clear, but later in the thread we had more or less straightened it out. So sorry to be the bearer of bad news ... :(

Can I start posting stuff for the December Challenge to get feedback or do I need to put it up as a single entry all at once? I've never done anything like this before, never done fanfic at all.

I'm afraid a lot of people don't seem to be reading the challenge. It has to be a Dominion-reinforcements-through-the-wormhole scenario, not just any point of divergence.

^^^Yep. That. Though, it's kind of a shame, because these have been great pieces!

I think you ahve to post it all at once.

Obviously it's Garm Bel Iblis's challenge so he is the final arbiter of the rules, but previously we have allowed feedback and changes to be made to the entry before voting.

You just need to make sure that the link you post in the challenge thread clearly points to the final version that you want to be considered in the challenge.

(Finally getting some headspace for writing, I like this idea I think I'll try it!)

a great idea, too bad I didn't see it until now. mayhaps I can whip something up... and if I do, are there any avid emailers here, that if I email to you my story, you will post it? my computer is being screwy and not letting me cut and paste anything, so it would be most appreciated...
