December Writing Challenge: A Single Act

History can be altered by a single act. Turn left instead of right. Hit the snooze once instead of twice. The ultimate question human beings asked themselves is what if?

The challenge for this month is a particular "what if."

What if the Defiant failed to wipe out the Dominion fleet in the wormhole with the help of the prophets. Sisko did the valiant thing, fired everything he had and took out about twenty warships before being blown to bits.

The rest of the 2,800 Jem'Hadar ships came pouring out of the wormhole.... then what happened? Ten minutes later or 40 years later?

3,000 word limit, deadline is midnight December 31,2009. Good luck!

I doubt I'll have anything to contribute to this one, but it will be very cool to see what the Niner crowd comes up with.

(P.S. and slightly OT: Garm Bel Iblis, if you're interested in reading a bigger perspective on what would have happened if the Dominion had won the war, you've got to check out CaptainSarine's "Star Trek: Restoration." It's set like 200 years later. It's a series, so way over your 3,000 word limit, but if this question interests you, the story is can't-miss. Actually, even if you don't care a fig about the Dominion, the story is can't-miss. But anyway ... I recommend you check it out.)

Hi all!

First off, thanks to Kes and Mistral for the plugs!!!

I love this idea, as anyone can see from my Restoration story, though the point of departure is slightly different. Still, I may just have a crack at this one, with a different version of a Dominion-won Federation... Depends on how my Restoration story work goes.

But huge kudoes to Garm, this is a fantastic idea!!!

Can I just double check the requirements of this challenge? Are you asking us to write a fanfic dealing with the specific event (the Jem'Hadar reinforcements successfully breaching the wormhole) or one dealing with a 'what if' of our own choice?

I got the opposite impression -- that this was, indeed, to deal with the specific "what if" listed in the OP. But if I'm wrong, I'll be happily wrong, and possibly even participate!

I think it's your choice, with the Dominion thing being an example of ideas.

Actually the opening caption does say something about "one what if in particular", so I'm thinking this is a specific theme for the challenge. I'm figuring that there's not a whole lot of wiggle room to go into a totally different direction with an idea that appeals to you outside of the stated challenge...

Which, I guess, is why it's a challenge in the first place...

Of course I could be completely wrong and it's okay to chase down what if ideas to your heart's content...

I may actually dust off the keyboard and submit something for this, it appeals to the Niner in me...

I just noticed the in particular part, so I guess it is on a certain idea. I might try to work on something, does it have to use canon characters, or can you make up your own? Random thought, I could have sworn I read 5,000 word limit...weird...not sure how I will be able to count them, but I'll consider making a short story (hoping to make it 3,000 or less).

I believe its clearly stated-the challenge deals with the Dominion fleet coming thru the wormhole. In the show, the Bajoran gods smashed it just when Sisko was going down. The what if is based on that not happening. I've already thought of 3-4 ideas, some of them being waaaaay out there, based on this. Should be fun.
