Title: As We Are
Series:
ST:TOS, Mirror Arc
Rating: G
Words: 885
Timeline: 2251
Disclaimer: The narrator is mine; the assassin is not.
Notes: First -- this is inside of my Mirror Universe timeline's side arc. It has absolutely nothing to do with the Arc of the Wolf. So, you poor SOBs are reading a story that is way the heck out of context and doesn't give any explanations. Hopefully, the heart of it will overcome that. Second -- yes, it's slashy. G-rated, one-sided, not-even-stated slashy, but I figured I'd warn for it, since I don't want anyone potentially reading the Mirror Arc's side stories and realizing my narrator is a male, then freaking out on me for not warning for it. But, again, I hope that the message and heart of the story overcome any misgivings people might have. In the end, it's far more about faith, hope and unconditional love than romance.

"Christmas" in the Mirror Universe...brrrr, creepy. It's a wonder they even HAVE such a holiday to begin with.

I'm curious, in your version of the MU, how far back in Earth's history does the corruption go?

I pretty much branch it off from the Eugenics Wars, but the real change doesn't become apparent until after WWIII. Between the Eugenics Wars and WWIII, there're a lot of subtle differences -- the big Empire doesn't rise until after WWIII.

But my version's a lot different than most; it's not as bloody, for one. And good people exist.

Thanks for the comment!

Your narrator is a male? I'm totally freaking out here.

No seriously, I misread the disclaimer. I though you said the narrator was female so I got all confused.

Male or female, heck of a story. Beautifully crafted. You do such an excellent job at conveying the place, time and most importantly your character. He speaks with such a clear and engaging voice that he feels more real than your average, everyday fanfic character.

Great job.

LMAO! Yeah, my first-person POV character is definitely of the male variety. I figured I should warn for it, even though it's nothing like what most people would consider slash (which much of the time seems more about author wish-fulfillment than characterization), since I have no idea what people here feel about such things, even carefully handled.

Thank you very much! I would love to take credit for his voice, but honestly, he has become (over the Mirror Arc) such a solid presense that I don't think I even have much to do with it as an author anymore. He kinda just speaks for himself, if that makes sense, and I do the typing. I'm very glad you like him, though, and while I don't (and can't) post the Mirror Arc stuff here, that he was able to come across as real, even out of context.

Thank you again for reading, and the wonderful comment!

That was beautiful! Christmas in the Watchmens world or in a nasty little MU where everybody is on edge, I'm not sure what-but I don't have to know, the story is enough. Excellent!

Thanks so much, Mistral. Wasn't what I was originally planning on writing for the challenge, but the mental imagery was enough to make this one come to life.

Depressing and fatalistic... but one would imagine Christmas would be just so in that universe. A brief reminder of how things used to be, of potential never explored, a more righteous path not taken.

Very nicely done.

Great story - despite not knowing anything about your version of the mirror universe, it still resonated for me.

I'm dying of curiosity though - who is the assassin? You say in the notes that he is not your creation, so who is he?

That would be the Mirror!Scott. Who is possibly the scariest critter I've ever written, though that's not all there is to him. I think there's a link in the notes up there if you're interested in reading that storyline. Thanks for the comment!

I'm very intrigued! I shall go and investigate.

Have fun! It's unfinished of yet. The main arc is one story; the side arc expounds on it.
