Death Wish

Amaraen

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I just saw this episode today.

Is it just me, or was Captain Janeway's decision a major violation of the Prime Directive? I don't see how this was interference in another culture/species. Considering that Q's suicide could have major ramifications for the Q, I would have thought she would want to stay as far away from getting involved as she could.

Or am I totally off base and completely missing something?

I think the Prime Directive mostly is meant to avoid contamination of less developed cultures. Clearly that didn't apply to the Q. Staying out of the Q business was barely even an option as the omnipotent Q brought their problems to Janeway and didn't seem inclined to simply leave if she asked nicely. Janeway would surely be familiar with Q's history with Picard and would thus know that they wouldn't leave Voyager alone until it suited them.

Quinn had already made Voyager a pawn in his attempts to evade Q, so Janeway had to do whatever she had to in order to protect the ship.
