DEADPOOL has found its writers

And they're the writers from Zombieland.

20th Century Fox is moving forward with the planned Deadpool spin-off with Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the "merc with a mouth" from Fox's 2009 hit prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine. According to Variety, they've hired writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the creative duo behind Sony's 2009 hit Zombieland, to pen the screenplay, the duo having already written an earlier draft of Sony's planned Venom spin-off.

No word when they plan to start filming although presumably it will be sometime after Reynolds wraps filming his leading role in Green Lantern for Warner Bros.

I'm pretty psyched. Zombieland was a very fun movie, with exactly the tone a movie like Deadpool needs.

I still wonder what the hell they were thinking with the Wolverine movie. Doesn't strike me as the most brilliant way to get people interested in that character.

The best part was when they took the character known as a "merc with a mouth" and then at the climax of the film when he's given the most screentime they sow his mouth shut.

To be honest, I'm surprised Reynolds is allowed to play both Deadpool and Green Lantern. Not that I have a problem with it, but I'm surprised studios don't have a "can't play any other superhero" clause in their contracts so as "not to confuse the moviegoing public," or something stupid like that.

Excellent choice. Deadpool needs to be funny. Comedy writers from one of the funniest comedies of the last year give me some hope.

I know, right? How amazingly mature of them. Just think how different things would have been if 20th Century Fox had this same mentality back when Bryan Singer decided to do Superman Returns. Instead of moving ahead without Singer, perhaps they could have waited (like they're waiting for Reynolds to finish Green Lantern) until Singer was finished with SR in '06 and perhaps pushed X3 back to 2008 or 2009.

So will Reynolds get to play both roles in Green Lantern vs. Deadpool? Hugh Jackman will still get the most screen time, of course.

I think that was because that Weapon X guy was so fracking annoyed with his yapping LOL which hey is kinda funny and could at least sort of lead to why he rarely takes his mask off, he'd be a pretty ugly cuss with torn up lips and face.

That's how I look it.

I actually would prefer if they got two different actors to play the role instead of letting one guy do it especially when the movies are out around the same time. Not that I have any interest in Deadpool mind you.

I don't think Reynolds has signed on the dotted line to play Deadpool. It would not surprise me if Fox eventually "went in another direction" (to use a bit of Hollywoodspeak) and picked another actor.

I think that's a fantastic first step to making a hilariously bad-ass Deadpool movie. I'm astonished at how much sense it makes to hire them. :techman:

Yeah, I was surprised when WB announced him as the lead for Green Lantern. I would have thought that in particular you might be nixed from being a DC hero and a Marvel one at the same time. And don't forget that he also played Hannibal King in the 3rd Blade movie - whatever happened to that spin-off, tee-hee!

It's been suggested that although a spin-off from Wolverine, Deadpool will in fact be re-booted and won't follow the same history as that movie, nor will he presented in the same way as he was there. Fair enough, given the lukewarm reception to how he was handled (motormouth hero played by wise-cracking actor and they sew his mouth up - then cut off his head? :wtf:). But then again, what about the claim that all the X-Men prequels and spin-offs would be consistent with each other?

Any guesses on who's gonna direct this? Galvid Hood was good with tsotsi but dropped the ball a bit with Wolverine

I think they should go with a comedy or character-driven director and not someone who has a reputation for doing action films. Stunt sequences can also be choreographed and tweaked, but without a solid story & characters, the stunt sequences mean nothing. So I nominate Marc Webber of (500) Days of Summer fame just as an example.

Apropos of nothing, Zooey Deschanel would look great in a squirrel costume.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
