DEAD SPACE is here! Discussion thread ...

Is there a difficulty setting for this game? I'm interested in it, but not if it's going to be a challenge ;) That's what I loved about Bioshock... scary cool game but on the easy setting it was impossible to die, and even if you did die you would just ressurect at a nearby chamber!

Yes - there are three modes you get when you first start the game (effectively Easy, Medium, Hard - they're called something else though), and a fourth "extremely hard" mode that you unlock upon beating the game.

Well I got Dead Space in my hot little hands and itching to leave work early to go play it!!!
Along with fracture and Silent Hill.

I didn't get the ultimate CC price matching deal I was hoping for but I walked out paying a little over $38.00 per game so I am very happy about that.

I've played through the first hour of the game -

First thoughts:

WOW.

Dead Space delivers a fucking awesome first impression.

The first thing that really strikes you, playing for about 10 minutes, is the detail ...

... from Isaac's animations - his labored breathing and lumbered stomping when injured - his beautiful, gothic suit that emits this sickly blue light around its environment, and the absolutely gorgeous holographic menus it projects, complete with Z-axis depth (it's the best menu system I've ever seen in a game)

... from the design of the Kellian (the ship that you take to get to the Ishimura) - the way the light from the system's star floods into the flight deck to your first view of the massive ship in the opening cinematic (which is all in-game... you can move the camera and look around). It's all so rich and moody and beautiful in this foreboding way...

... to the design of the Ishimura itself ... fantastic! It's a massive, 60 year old oil rig in space in which something unspeakably horrible has taken place - and that's exactly what it feels like. Signs of the life that previously inhabited the ship are strewn all about -from the graffiti in the bathroom stalls to the magazines strewn about crew lounges to the advertisements and announcements about canceled enteratainment events that loop repeatedly like a broken record .. it's a fully realized world, which strengthens the terror of the game because these horrible creatures that are hunting you are doing so in a world that feels real

... to the terror ... the game knows how to pace itself. There are actually VERY few enemies in the first hour of the game - and there are long stretches where you won't find any ... and ironically, THESE are the scariest parts. When you're lumbering through this room with the lights flashing, hearing the audio of the ship creaking and moaning around you, to a muffled sound of something crawling around in the ventilation shafts above you ... you're expecting to get a "jump" moment at any second ... and when it doesn't come it just makes it all the more terrifying, for some reason.

The "jump" moments that ARE there are well paced and beautifully executed - I yelped out loud at least 5 times in the first hour..

...to the combat - what can I say? Using a plasma cutter to slice a horrible creature's leg off - then his other leg - then his slicer arm thing - then his other slicer arm thing - all while hearing him scream in agony and watching blood go gushing by the gallons out of each dismemembered limb ... then, when the creature is lying helpless wriggling in a pool of goo on the ground, you go to to him and stop your huge boot on his head, squishing it flat ... well, it's just incredibly. fucking. satisfying.

It's just all so brilliantly put together.

No grade yet as these are only my first impressions ...

Ok first Impressions...WOW!!!

Make sure to read Twilight's post because he hit the nail squarely on the head.

At the beginning the game (to me) it has a BioShock feel about it. It's not like BioShock mind you it just feels like it at first.

That feeling quickly fades as you get the shit scared out of you the first time!
In one of the dark, creepy corridor's a electrical panel popped as I went by it and scared the hell out of me.

Dead Space, without a doubt is one of the best, creepiest, coolest games I've played in a while.

I don't know if any of you read my post about wondering if we will ever see the perfect game. Well so far I may have found it.

I just finished the first chapter and played about 10 min into the second and I haven't found anything about the game that I dislike (so far).

The graphics are awesome.
The atmosphere and lighting are totally creepy.
The surround sound is off the hook and thank GAWD the game has great save points.
They are in panels on the wall that are in just about every area I've come across so far.

I can tell you this, the only thing that stopped me from playing the game was hunger, so as I type this I'm trying to wolf down a samitch so I can get back to it.
I can also say I have another page open looking to pre-order part 2. JK.

Dead Space will be proudly displayed in my collection of games, its that good.
I have 2 other new games I bought tonight but I see myself starting another game on the hardest level immediately after beating it on hard.

I truly feel E.A has a hit on their hands.
Do yourself a favor, don't rent it buy it. These are the kind of games we as a gaming community need to support.
In fact stop reading this thread and get your ass out and get it NOW!

10/10 so far.

Enjoy!

Anyone have the artbook? They have the blue-red 3d glasses for the 3d images. Sweet.

Yeah, I picked this up when I preordered the game. It actually is pretty cool.

As for my impressions of the game..

It's pretty badass. Dripping with atmosphere, fun to play, and scary. You always feel like you should be looking over your shoulder for some enemy to pop out of the wall...

I thought about getting this at Toys R Us with their 3-for-2 sale this week... but then I realized I have a lot of games that are sitting around collecting dust that have probably dropped in price since I bought them.

Damn. Now I sort of want to get this. Is the game interesting to play with a group of friends?

A few minor annoyances to report.
Nothing so far to change my score mind you, just a few things that I noticed.

First.
The big double doors seem like they take forever to open.
I'm pretty sure the devs did this on purpose to give you the feeling of panic "open up the door! There is a big monster behind me! hurry, hurry hurry!!".
That feeling is lost when you've cleared an area and the save point is near the door.
When you die (and on hard I do that a lot) it starts you back at your last save point and like I said when it's near the double door you just want to get back to the action and not wait on a door to open.

Second.
On hard the game is really hard! Not that I mind that but there is a fine line between challenging and annoying.
Minor Spoiler alert.

At the beginning of the second level you have another quarantine and you get locked in a medical area.
You get a ton of monsters attacking you from every direction and believe me when I say every direction I mean every direction!! They are also coming at different speeds so it's hard to judge which ones to try to take on first.
In cases like this I would put my back to the wall and try my best to battle it out with the baddies, well its pretty hard to do that they when are coming through the walls behind you as well!!
Like I said a fine line between challenging and annoying and it came pretty close to crossing it. I can't imagine what this area will be like on the next hardest setting.
That coupled with a slow door at the restart made that area a little annoying.

Lastly.
The stasis shots don't always seem to connect with the monsters.
I'm aiming right at them, they are 3 ft in front of me I fire and BAM! They grab me and I either get my head bitten off or ripped in half for my trouble!!!
At any rate its a gory ending for poor little me!!

Again, minor complaints, man I love this game! :techman:

The big double doors seem like they take forever to open.
Yeah, those doors can get a little annoying but I don't think it's that bad. I disliked the boring long elevator rides in Mass Effect a helluva lot more. I'm going to give the developers of Dead Space the benefit of the doubt and guess that maybes there's some content loading going on while those doors open.

I died a few times in that quarantined hospital room... I felt as though the monsters were spawning in different locations depending on where I was, but that may have just been my imagination.

I love the zero-G and space walk mechanics, I can't wait to see how they utilize those further in the game.

Already the monsters are getting significantly tougher. I hope I can find some more power nodes and upgrade my weapons.

I got to the beginning of the 3rd chapter after 2+ hours of gaming and decided to call it a night. Great game.

Damn. Now I sort of want to get this. Is the game interesting to play with a group of friends?
A friend who is into gaming would probably enjoy watching for an hour or so but after that they'd just get bored. There's no multiplayer component. I think the game works best with you alone in a dark apartment late at night.

PLEASE BE PATIENT DURING DECONTAMINATION PROCESS.

Oh and don't worry about those Monsters shredding the wall to get to you while we have you locked in here.

Do they bother you? Well lets turn the lights out so you can't see them, how would that be?

I pretty much knew how the scenario would play out but it still scared the hell out of me!

Man I love this game!!!

I gotta stop playing for now because it loses some of it's effect in a brightly lit room.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game last night. Though my drive to pick up as many achievements as possible kind of pulls me out the game a little bit. First thing I did when I got to the Zero G room was jump around 100 times. The first thing I did when I got the Kinesis gun was pick up the same object and shoot it into a corner 100 times.

Though that kinesis gun thing did make me notice that all the body bags at the tram station at the start of Chapter 2 are gone at the end of Chapter 2...
