Dead Hair

I was reading an article about the hair on your body being dead once it reaches the scalp.

If the hair on your head is dead why doesn't it simply break apart but still continues to grow?

Tiny blood vessels at the base of every follicle feed the hair root to keep it growing. But once the hair is at the skin's surface, the cells within the strand of hair aren't alive anymore. The hair you see on every part of your body contains dead cells.

Kinda odd walking around with all of the dead stuff growing off of your face, head arms and legs.

Kinda gives you the willy billies.

Bones also don't fall apart the second you die. Dead doesn't mean it needs to fall apart immediately.

Mystery solved. ;)

I'll move it to a forum that's more appropriate for chit chat. I think we're all well aware of the fact that hair isn't really "alive" so I don't see this as a science topic. ;)

Tell us your hair stories! Does it also freak you out to be walking around with dead stuff on your head?!

I went bald 11 years ago and never looked back. I did not like the way I looked with hair.

Or clean shaven. I went goatee at the same time so now I'm rocking the Ming-the-Merciless look.

Only trouble with that is: Beards itch...God only knows how guys with really long beards (like the 2013 Red Sox) manage to get away with it. If I let my goatee get too long it starts to itch like hell and I hafta trim it. Any of you guys with beards - if you got any tips on how NOT to have your beard itch, I'd love to hear it!

I see hipsters with big beards walking around when I go out for my lunch breaks. I imagine it must be uncomfortable... but maybe not as uncomfortable as the big ear plugs.

Yes, nails are also comprised of dead cells.

You know what would be freaky? if our teeth kept growing out longer and longer just like hair and nails. :wtf: :ack:

Don't the gnawing teeth of various rodents continue to grow, and they wear down due to the gnawing, thus keeping an equilibrium?

Plus, the outermost layer of skin is also "dead".

Great merciful Mogg!!! We're all encased within "shells" of death!!! ARRGGGHHHH!!!!!

Stay hydrated. It probably itches because the skin underneath is dry.

I've had a beard for years. It never itches.

You know you can't actually feel the beard, right? Mens' faces naturally grow hair. It's no different than having hair on your head or on your balls.

Skin itches when hair is initially growing through it. But after a while, your skin acclimates and should stop itching.

If a full beard is causing your skin to itch, then there's something wrong with your skin.

Has anyone mentioned that hard skin is also dead? I find it very important. If you talk about dead hair, don't forget about the hard skin, it gets overlooked all the time.

Oh, sorry. Well, it can't be said often enough.
True, I'm with Redfern in this matter; it's utterly unappropriate that we as living beings, the very apex of life as we know it, should be shrouded in death and germs... YIKES and :barf:
