DC's Blue Beetle in development as a live action TV series

Blue Beetle (the Jaime Reyes version) may be headed to the small screen in a live action show. Here's what Geoff Johns has passed along on Twitter:

"BLUE BEETLE NEWS from DCE!! We have a live-action test of Jaime Reyes' scarab activating his suit. It. Is. Awesome."
"Blue Beetle's going to appear in most of the Brave and the Bold's this year and we're hoping to develop a live-action show. Fingers crossed!"
"If I can break it out of the vault, I'll bring it to SDCC. LIVE ACTION BLUE BEETLE!!"

Interesting...Geoff did say this was on his list of properties he wanted developed so it doesn't surprise me this would already be propped up. I've not really followed the Jamie Reyes version, in fact I think the only trade I have with him is "Infinite Crisis". I think as long as they stay away from the Smallville formula and go in a different direction and off the CW this has a shot at working.

Glad they're going with Jaime, given how DC seems to be killing off or writing out its nonwhite superheroes in favor of bringing back the originals. Still, it might be cool if they acknowledged the legacy and included references to Ted Kord and... err... the other guy whose name I forget because I only really know BB from The Brave and the Bold and the first Justice League International trade paperback.

Geoff Johns put some stills from the FX test on his blog. Here's his blog entry followed by the stills:

"I feel very fortunate to have been a part of Blue Beetle’s introduction way back in INFINITE CRISIS. I’ve said it before, but thanks to the BLUE BEETLE series launched by Keith Giffen and John Rogers with a great design by Cully Hamner, Jaime Reyes rocks. Great character, great story, great look. He’s already appeared in animation, had action figures and right now he’s on my computer in live-action glory. I have an early special effects test that has been floating around of what his armored scarab-suit could look like. This isn’t final. This isn’t greenlit. It’s only a test that was done. We still have a long way to go to see if we can get this off the ground and a lot of people to jump on board…but check out some stills."

I hated the art in the Reyes version of Blue Beetle but have liked his appearances elsewhere. It would be nice if this could tie into the Smallville universe, say an appearance by everyones favorite keeper of the Watchtower in the pilot. They do need to avoid the angst ridden teen thing however and go for more of a wow this is an amazing and scarey thing happening to me. Oh yea and a good solid super powered villian is a must.

Don't get me wrong, Jaime is easily one of the better written and certainly the most grounded "new" comic book character of the last decade (probably the last two decades.) I'm just not convinced the character will be executed very well in a live action show.

I'm hoping, but I'm not expecting.
As long as they don't spend several seasons showing the build up to him becoming the Blue Beetle without actually doing it

This sounds promising. I'm glad they are going with Jamie as well. Though I wonder if BB would work better as a cartoon and not live action. But in any event, I will be watching. DC needs another live-action show after Smallville and I'm glad they are trying to stretch their legs to go beyond Batman and Superman.

*blinks after seeing screencaps of the transformation*

Whoa.

*blinks again*

Damn.

Sidebar comment: Who's for Wil Wheaton as Ted Kord if this does go to series?
