DC Universe Online goes free to play!

It's not about tutoring you in the basic gameplay mechanics. The game gives you 30 levels to figure out what you want to do with your character once you hit max level. That's plenty of time to play with your abilities, learn how to work with a team/play your role in the normal Alerts, earn cash and generally get to grips with the world before you start the harder stuff like Raids.

but I'm largely randomly selecting that stuff with no real understanding of what I am doing and it seems to make no difference - any mission it suggests I've been able to complete with no problems. So I'm not sure why that makes a difference?

It won't make much of a difference until you start utilising your chosen role.

Right now, while you're getting from 1-30 in the solo missions, you pretty much only need to concentrate on the standard DPS role - kill everything as quick as possible to get through, but the game allows you to take on your Tank, Controller, or Healer role once you hit lvl10. You can play around with that role at any point past 10 (push up on the d-pad and select 'switch role'), but it isn't recommended to use that role exclusively until you hit 30. The roles break down like this...

DPS - what everyone starts with. Your job is to inflict as much damage as possible, and you don't need any kind of support abilities. You want to focus on increasing Health, Defense and Might stats.

Tank - You are the target. It's your job to get the attention of the enemies and keep it so the other group members can attack or do their job without getting overwhelmed. You want to focus on increasing Health, Defense and Dominance stats. Also can't hurt to get your Restoration as high as possible if you're a Fire Tank.

Healer - Speaks for itself. Concentrate on increasing Health, Defense and Restoration.

Controller - Provides power restoration to allies, and restrict the abilities of enemies, such as reducing their ability to heal or damage. Concentrate on Health, Defense and Vitalization.

You'll notice that some of your powers will say in the description what they do in a support role as well as a damage one. Some of those powers interact when used together to give you added effects. It doesn't outright tell you all that because it wants you to play around and find out what works best for you and your playing style, rather than everyone cut and pasting the same powerset.

Fascinating. But who the hell would want to restrict themselves to just one pre-set role? Being a healer sounds like the most tedious job ever and I can't see it appealing to many players. Even tank (which at level 10 the game decided my hero was) sounds boring since all you do is sit there like a lemon absorbing damage while someone else gets the satisfaction of kicking arse. After all, you're supposed to be playing a superhero/villain dammit! ;)

It'd be so much better if they could get away from this dusty old D&D/WoW mould and come up with something more dynamic that doesn't force you to min-max in order to be successful.

All I've done there is outline the basic roles. It's how you play and work as a team that makes the game. After all, this isn't a single-player game. It's multiplayer, and the game expects you to want to play in a group as a team. Hell, you can even play solo missions with a group if you want.

And you're not just stuck in one role, as you can switch between support and damage at any time. Just be aware that you need the right gear for the job. Investing in Tank gear to play as a Tank is fine, but if you suddenly want to switch to DPS the gear won't be as effective because it's not raising the stats you need. That's why a lot of players carry two sets of gear. Either that or have separate characters for different roles.

Ok, the one thing that really peeves me about this game is how EQ is not very durable. It breaks far too often. In the middle of an instance and your EQ breaks? Too bad. Have to exit in order to repair. On top of that, I seem to have lost the EQ I had including my current look. It reverted to an older one.

While I was playing today I noticed I got credit for finding and defeating Bizzaro, but I never even saw Bizzaro anywhere. What's up with that?

I dunno, but that's just bizzare :p

I deleted my character and restarted with a new one today. Same name, but I decided to focus on hand-to-hand combat, and I'm liking it better. He's an Ex-Military guy who can fly. He lost his eyes though, so he wears a visor.

Btw, did you have to defeat Scarecrow? I have a feeling I'll need some help for that soon.

No, I never even went looking for him. But I'll help if you want if we get on together. Oh, and I totally changed my character's appearance, now I'm wearing a more modern looking typically superhero suit. If anyone wants to explain how to do a screenshot, I can post a pic.

From what I can remember on how to take screenshots. Hit Up on the D-Pad. This will give you a number of things you can do with the game, including screenshots. The screenshot key is Triangle when you're in that mode, I think. From there, in the PS3 Dashboard navigate over to your media and you should find a folder with your screenshots. Use a flash drive to copy them over and then upload them to an image hosting service like Photobucket.

I just got my character up to Lv30, so naturally the first thing I do is go to one of the high end vendors to get some Lv30 armour...and it won't let me. I had to look up online to find out why. Apparently you need more than cash and faction renown to get these items, you also need something else (I forget what they call it) that you can ONLY get doing raids, alerts and other PvP stuff. on top of that I have an almost full inventory, an entierly full bank, a credit balance nearing the 1500 mark (with over 2Gs already in the overflow) and nothing worthwhile to spend the money on or a reason to get anymore XP. I think this is where the game is going to start to suck...

After leaving this for a week, I thought I'd give it another go - "you are 3876 in line"... so maybe not! :-)

^You must be picking the peak times or just really unlucky because I haven't been in a queue all week.
