DC launching digital service with Titans and Young Justice

That's amazing. The Doom Patrol episodes of Titans haven't even aired yet, and they've already spawned a spinoff. The episodes must've turned out really well, or else DCU is really desperate for content.

The other interesting bit of news is that Cyborg will be involved. Hopefully that means he'll show up in Titans too.

Hey, yeah, that means Berlanti will have another multi-show DC crossover universe. First the Arrowverse, now the Titanverse. (Though I'm still hoping they'll turn out to be in the same multiverse, at least.)

I wonder if "The Doom Patrol" will be reworked so that it serves as a definitive "backdoor pilot" for the spinoff, or if they'll just go the "Flash on Arrow" route and film a full Pilot for the DP series that references the events of the Titans episode while also introducing Cyborg and Crazy Jane.

So that is the first we've heard about Cyborg then. I thought maybe he'd been announced as part of the Titans cast and I just forgotten.

Wow, that's already 4 live action series and 2 animated ones. I guess they had to have that many, because they couldn't let the CW have more superhero shows than the official DC channel. :D

Now, when's that big Comic Con so we can get some trailers and sneak previews? ;)

What makes you think the episode wasn't intended as a backdoor pilot from the start? If anything, it was an amazingly successful one, getting a series order before it was even aired.

The press release says that the DP series picks up after the events of Titans season 1, with Cyborg calling the team together for a new mission. That makes it pretty unambiguous that it'll have its own premiere episode setting up its story arc, after and distinct from the DP guest episode(s) on Titans.

It is very odd that the press description does not mention DP member Robotman who has already been cast for a guest appearance on Titans along with the rest. Could the use of the name Cyborg just be a huge screwup?

He's mentioned.

As per Entertainment Weekly (emphasis mine):
Doom Patrol is a re-imagining of one of DC’s most beloved group of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities — but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of Titans, Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.”

Aww, no shorts? :p

That all sounds nice BTW, except the "only available in the US" part... but here's hoping the new shows will be available on Netflix over here.

As I stated before, Netflix Germany adding the first two seasons of YJ recently is a good sign. But we can always use the suggest-a-show function to show them our interest in these shows.

I never noticed before, but doesn't Brenton Thwaites (Robin) look a little like a tougher Burt Ward?

I know it comes from the comics, but I don't get why DC decided to give Raven the "civilian" name Rachel Roth. I mean, Raven is a perfectly valid female given name. In the original comics, it was her real name, not a superhero code name. So I don't get why they changed that.

It's nice to get an idea of what older shows and movies are going to be on there. I was kind of hoping Smallville would included, I've been waiting for it to pop up on a streaming service so I can do a rewatch without having to rent a crapload of discs from Netflix.
IGN's article includes a slightly longer list of shows and movies.
IGN said:
The service will also feature a selection of classic films and series based on DC characters, both live-action and animated, including Superman I-IV, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Batman Ninja, Birds of Prey, The Flash (1990), Teen Titans, Super Friends, Legion of Superheroes, Young Justice, Static Shock, Lois & Clark, Constantine (2014), Adventures of Superman, Max Fleischer’s Superman Serials, Superboy, Batman: The Animated Series, Wonder Woman ‘77, All Star Superman, Batman vs. Robin, Batman: Year One, Batman Beyond: The Return of Joker, Green Lantern: First Flight, Gotham by Gaslight, Justice League: Doom, Justice League vs. Teen Titans, Superman: Doomsday and the animated Wonder Woman movie.
Even without Smallville there's still some stuff I've been wanting to see, like Lois & Clark, Superboy, the old Flash series, and some of more recent animated movies.

Two things:
1) Smallville is available in its entirety on Hulu

2) The key word in that IGN article is "including", so their list is likely not a full description of DC Universe's film and TV content, either; we'll just have to wait and see.

The service definitely seems interesting. But, I'm starting to think all this stuff means its going to be $20ish bucks a month if not more, and I don't think it can justify being double the standard netflix or hulu price even with comics. It also doesn't help that Titans, the first original live action show we've seen stuff from, looks like absolute shit (dark and gritty, and Starfire is both not orange and looks like a hooker, are we sure Zach Snyder isn't making the show?). But, I'm sure it will get at least one month out of me when Young Justice comes out, although if it pulls that Discovery "Online but still weekly episodes" crap I'll wait until its totally finished.

I have absolutely no idea why you'd immediately jump to that conclusion; DC could easily and justifiably offer this service for as little as $5.99 and still make a profit.
