DC announces mass cancellation of animated projects

The list so far confirmed is:

Green Lantern sequel
WW sequel (in fact, DC now has shevled ANY plans to do any animateds based primarily on female characters)
Batgirl Year One
Judas Contract (Titans)
unnamed Aquaman DTDVD

also announced is that there are NO plans to adapt Hush or The Long Halloween due to the difficulty of simplifying the storylines to fit for time.

There MAY still be hope for a new Batman Beyond feature, but that is a long time off if ever.

Not disclosed is the fate of the GL regular series or Young Justice.

I think that all DC Animated Films should be stand-alone so they don't degrade like most sequels do.

The 'no female hero movies' thing is blood-boilingly illogical. The WW movie didn't sell as fast as they hoped (though it did pick up and do decently in the end), and next thing Bruce Timm's breaking the news that there won't be a Batgirl movie, because the only possible factor that could have been at play is that movies about women suck.

Wankers.

Wow...and they just announced the features on the Batman Red Hood DVD today or yesterday as well which of course includes the sneak peak into the next movie...is that still happening? I guess this also includes the Superman/Batman Supergirl sequel that had been talked about.

Those are a separate department, and still going ahead (they just announced YJ).

No, it doesn't. Any project that there's a featurette on is happening; this just applies to ideas that they had kicked around and at most done some preliminary work on.

The ultimate result of this is that future DC animated movies will be either starring Superman, Batman, or the JLA (which has Superman and Batman).

I wonder if this means that there are no current plans to launch a "Wonder Woman" live action film in the near future? This just seems like a bizarre policy to have. I was looking forward to maybe seeing the Long Halloween and Dark Victory being adapted.

I was looking forward to the Titan: Judas Contract.

I am tired of the "kiddie titans" in the Teen Titans and Brave and the Bold.

I want to see the real Titans!

And the same goes for the Legion of Superheroes: Great Darkness saga!

Which is a shame (the Bat/Superman focus), because some of my favorite JL eps were the ones focused on "secondary" characters like "Double Date", and "The Greatest Story Never Told".

I really don't understand their logic here: why would you release a DTV without being willing to consider long-term sales results? GL and WW sold at least as much as JL: New Frontier.

Yup.

I think DC is still hanging some hopes that the Green Lantern movie may bump him up in the same league as Supes and Bats, but as far as anyone else--forget it.

Because modern businessmen are conditioned to think only of the short-term: the next week's sales figures, THIS quarter's balance sheet, etc.

It doesn't help that all the investment by the studio is up front, meaning THEY carry the negative balance on their books until sales reach the "profit" numbers.

I fear you are correct.

So the only guys pushing the smaller less well known characters are now just pushing bats and supes? Dang it.

I agree. Especially with an actress that so looks the part exists in Sarah Lancaster, a.k.a. Dr. Ellie Bartowski-Woodcomb on Chuck. I'd have her play Diana and have Lynda Carter as Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons as her mother.

Can't say as I'll miss the GL sequel as First Flight didn't really do it for me. Wonder Woman was ok, but i can see what it was slow to take off. I can't help wonder though if waiting to see how well the GL movie does will be self defeating as (best case scenario - the film does very well) by the time they know that, it'd be 6 months to a year or so (based on their previous development cycles) before they can get the DVD on the shelves and by that time interest may have waned as some other blockbuster comes out.

Cancelling 'Batgirl: Year One' though, that's just a terrible shame, that was a good story and it already had much of the feel of Timm & Co's work as it stood, so an adaptation should have been pretty damn organic.

Still, the hope that another Batman Beyond may be over the horizon is good news. I just wonder if the thinking is to keep it in line with the DCAU or go for a re-imagining. If it's the former, I'd be interested to see it set after 'Epilogue', with Terry a firmly established veteran.

Not surprised the 'Judas Contract' film has been dumped though. That project has been kicking around for years as I recall and keeps being put back and put back. Either there's not much confidence in it or they're having trouble getting to grips with something in it's development.

Maybe the quality of GL sucked? I mean the movie...was terrible.

No it wasn't, but that's another thread.

GL and WW sold well (this is what Timm said in the interview), just not QUICKLY, which is what WB wants. They want to move (x)-hundred thousand units the first month, not wait 12 months to move them.

Damn. And I was just remarking to a friend how impressed I was with DC for producing so many animated films. :wtf:
