Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor blog

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

It's Thursday again, kids. You know what that means, right?

Me and my buddy Dayton Ward return with another installment of Star Trek Re-watch on TOR.com.

She's crying because she knows this shitty episode
will be listed on her IMDb profile forever.

This week’s season-three stinker is And the Children Shall Lead.” Because Dayton and I suffered through watching this misbegotten turd from the south end of The Great Bird of the Galaxy, the least you guys can do is go read what we managed to write in between failed attempts to claw out our own eyes.

But be warned: you’ll want to have a few stiff drinks first. This one really is that bad.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

i generally try to forget this episode exists. it's not even one i tend to cite as One of the Worst Episodes Ever - unlike say Spock's Brain, Way to Eden or That Awful Tosh Valentine.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

Oh, I really do need to get caught up on these. Are you guys going to do the other two seasons after you finish up three?

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

^ No, seasons one and two were recapped and analyzed by author Eugene Myers and his friend, Torie Atkinson, who are also doing season three write-ups on their own website.

After we finish the third season of TOS, we might move on to TNG, or perhaps the first six movies. One thing at a time, however. Next we have to get through "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" and the rest of season three...

At least the worst is past now...

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

I have a special hatred for "The Cloud-Minders," though that's partly because there was a stretch of a few years when, anytime I happened to catch TOS on TV in syndication (back when it still was in syndication all over the place), it almost always happened to be that episode.

Plato's Stepchildren and Way To Eden are gouge-your-own-eyes-out episodes...

But ATCSL is a go-back-in-time-and-gouge-out-your-infant-self's-eyes-for-his/her-future-good episode....

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

I kinda like "Plato's Stepchildren." Michael Dunn is cool, and there's some good Spock character stuff. And the parts that people tend to see as ludicrous, like the poetry and horsey riding, I see as a harrowing depiction of sadism and humiliation.

And the Children Shall Lead was actually one of my favorite episodes in elementary school. It, A Piece of the Action, The Enterprise Incident, and Balance of Terror were nearly tied in my estimation. Oddly enough, it's the only one of those four that I haven't seen since then. I wonder if I'd dislike it now.

And The Children Shall Lead was one of my favorites when I was a little kid as well. I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but Gorgan actually gave me nightmares.

Re: Dayton Ward & David Mack are re-watching TOS season 3 on the Tor b

I think there's something really visceral about the episode that makes it scary for children, because I have very intense memories of watching it as a child as well.

The thread necromancer strikes again:

It’s a dreary, drizzly Thursday here in New York City, but there’s a bright spot in the gloom: a brand-new installment of the TOR.com series Star Trek Re-watch by yours truly, ably aided and abetted by Dayton Ward.

This week, Dayton and I sink our teeth into the third season’s fifth aired episode, Is There in Truth No Beauty? — and, for once, we’re not in complete agreement about its merits.

Watch the episode for free on the CBS website, then read our review and leave a comment to tell us what you think!

Rise and shine, campers! (And not just because it’s 2:30 in the afternoon.) It’s Thursday, and you know what that means — a brand new installment of TOR.com’s weekly feature, Star Trek Re-watch by Dayton Ward and yours truly. This week we take on the third-season episode Spectre of the Gun with both guns blazing.

What are you in for? Half-built sets, floating heads that look like mutant broccoli, and James T. Kirk up against the most infuriating no-win scenario since the Kobayashi Maru. It’s a good one this week, kids, so enjoy!

Another sunrise brings us another Thursday, and with it another Star Trek Re-watch column by Dayton Ward and Yours Truly!

This week we release the hounds on Day of the Dove,” one of the third season’s less-awful hours of entertainment. It has everything you could ask for: swordfights, race hatred, hot Klingon babes, and a completely unexplained antagonist.

So, if you haven’t already been checking out our Re-watch columns, now is your chance. Head on over to Tor.com and enjoy!

"Day of the Dove" is a high point of the third season. Silly concept, but I love that lyrical Jerome Bixby dialogue, and Michael Ansara is neck-and-neck with John Colicos for Best Klingon Ever.
