Day of the Vipers is out!!!

bennyrex

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I decided to check the ST section of my local bookstore today... I got a tremendous promotion recently, and with the new finances at my disposal, I've decided to start buying the books. I've bought a fair number of the recent ones now, and was planning on seeing if my local store had anything that caught my fancy that I hadn't bought yet. Lo and behold, Day of the Vipers was right there on the bookshelf. Isn't this an April book? I know the schedule is fluid, but whatever. It was a delightfully unexpected treat, as this is one of the books I've REALLY been waiting for.

I'm trying to not read my recently bought books until my epic 3-day Greyhound trip, but I had to read the first couple chapters. It looks like it's shaping up to be everything I hoped it would be. I just don't know if I'll be able to not read it for another week and a half, knowing that it's sitting right there.

Has anyone else seen Day of the Vipers on the shelves? I was surprised to see no threads for it yet on here...

Other books I bought: (Which I'm also saving for the Greyhound.)
Orion's Hounds
The Buried Age
Burning House
Both Mirror Universe Anthologies

Mass-market paperbacks generally come out in the middle of the month before the listed publication month. So an April book showing up around March 15th is quite normal.

I hope you enjoy Orion's Hounds and The Buried Age!

Lucky you, I can't wait to get my hands on DotV.

Sounds to me like you've made some good choices there, I've read all of those except for A Burning House (The Burning House?), and I loved each one of them.:bolian:

I ordered mine from Amazon the other day and am looking forwardto it.

Question - how much (if any) of the DS9 relaunch do I have to have read in order to grok "Vipers"? I have read about halfway through "Mission Gamma" so far.

Man, I really feel behind in my reading. I'm stuck on Hollow Men right now, not because it's a bad book but because I haven't had a lot of time to read. I've been reading it for about a month now and haven't been able to get to the book store and pick up any of the January or February releases yet.

My copy arrived in the post yesterday from my usual Amazon Marketplace source - thoroughly enjoying it so far!

*Mild spoilers of up to page 120/Chapter 5 of Day of the Vipers*

My attempts to not read it until my bus trip have failed miserably. I'm trying to compromise and read it much slower then usual, and still have about half of it for the bus. Anyway, I'm about 120 pages in now. It's already one of my 'wow' books. As in, every once in a while, I stop reading, sit back and just say 'wow.'

It's a neat surprise, and I'm glad I can add another writer to my list of 'wow' Star Trek writers that have written books that make me do that.

I love when there's a book with characters I care about, but at the same time, are flawed, especially when they're flawed in ways I can relate to. That's part of why I love Vanguard so much, and so far it seems to be true with the characters here as well. I'm especially fond of Darrah Mace so far, and I loved the 'bonding' moment between him and Skrain at the feast. Everything that happens seems so... understandable. Every character's actions and motivations make complete sense, even as the seeds are planted for the complete tragedy I know is coming.

I'm also enjoying this wider window we're getting to look through at the Cardassian and Bajoran cultures. I'm finding everything entirely fascinating, from the cultural exploration, to the low-key character moments, to the political intrigue.

My best friend isn't hugely into Trek, but he's gotten excited from me talking about it, especially the books. We're going to watch through all of DS9 together at some point in the future. I'm debating whether I should get him to read this trilogy first, or not. It definitely feels like this book could be read on it's own without knowledge of the show, and still be a great read. I'd love to see how it changes how he sees the show if he reads this first.

But would that be like watching Episodes 1-3 before 4-6 in Star Wars? I can't think of any major revelations that happened in DS9 that could be spoiled by this trilogy. Can anyone else?

probably not any major revelations so much as the basic context of the events cultures and characters. These kinds of books almost always have nods to future events situations.

Cool!!!! I need to pick up a copy. Of course I have some other Trek novels I want to finish first (Q & A, Before Dishonor & Sword of Damocles). I have been trying to read each Trek novel really slowly so I can really enjoy it. It is easy to read a Trek novel in one night (because they're so enjoyable), so I have been trying to read only a little bit at a time. Does anyone else do that????

Picked up the book yesterday.

Won't read it until I've finished the last Vulcan's Soul book and the next SCE anthology and picked up all three installments, but two things I immediately like about this book already: a Dramatis Personae and an appendix.

Saw it at the Borders off of Slaughter & I-35 in south Austin yesterday, but I didn't get it, since I'm still readin' Forged in Fire. But, I know its out there, waitin' for me to buy my copy.

i saw it at borders but i always wait to pick it up when i see it at my small independent book store here in SF. there aren't that many left and they need to be supported. and i'm reading The Klingon Gambit anyway. :)

I did pick up IDW's Year Four and the Dark Horse Aliens vs. Predator Omnibus 1 though so I have plenty to read in the mean time since Staceys can sometimes be up to a week behind.
