Day of the Dove VFX

Ronald Held

Does anyone know who created the original alien lights swirl(*)? I did not see the remastered version so I do not know if it was changed.

Thanks very much, Mike. It came up in an Foundation 3D thread.

The late Mike Minor had this to say in and old interview (in Starlog Number 25, August 1979):

"There were lots of bits and pieces for me during the TV series run. I assisted Bill Theiss in constructing helmets for the spacesuits used in one episode [well, actually two episodes: 'The Tholian Web' and 'Whom Gods Destroy']. I had five days to do four helmets. Then there was 'Day of the Dove,' which had the Klingons on board the Enterprise with swords in hand and everybody fighting everybody. There was a little alien whirlagig that fed on anger. The original idea was to rig a puppet, but there wasn't enough time on the set, so I suggested an effect with a child's pinwheel that could be 'burned into' the footage in post-production. I put some jewels and little flashing sequins on it so it would sparkle and Van Der Veer [Photo Effects optical company] added some color effects. The shot was double printed by flopping the film so it wouldn't seem to spin in one direction."

And indeed, when you look at it, you can see that it's spinning, but it's hard to tell in which direction. The answer is that it's spinning in both directions.

Thanks for that inquiry on my behalf, Ronald! And thanks, Mike, for that answer! And thanks, GSchnitzer, for that great Starlog BTS info-quote of Mike Minor's! :)

My DOTD piece's use of the “whirlagig” (love that) has been duly credited to Mike. :)
