Day of the Dove question

Imagine how Starfleet would've reacted if it had been the Enterprise destroyed and 400 crewman dead. With Kirk making it back with himself and less than forty crewman.

And blamed this on some weird lifeform that no one has ever encountered before and he has no evidence for whatsoever.

Kirk would never have commanded a starship again.

Remember, courtmartial for a Captain losing his ship was standard procedure for Starfleet. They courtmartialed Picard for losing Stargazer when it was clearly a case of surprise attack and Picard had to pull a brilliant move just get out with their lives.

Well, to be fair, the use of the term 'court martial' doesn't automatically mean it's a criminal trial or that the Captain is suspected of wrongdoing. It's just a standard way to get the circumstances of that ship's destruction, made part of the official record.

A court martial doesn't necessarily carry the same negative connotations as a civilian trial. It just means a military court proceeding.

It's a matter of why the court martial was held that determines the positives or negatives.

I imagine the Klingon version would be a bit different. :klingon:

"Why did you lose your ship? Were you incompetent?"

"You take that back, Your Honor, or I will rip it back from your throat and tie it in a knot, then split the knot with my sword, Your Honor!"

"Why, you... Clear the floor! Bring my weapon! No, the big one!"

(Fight ensues, concludes.)

"Whew! I stand cleared of all charges now. But I sure ain't clearing this mess here. Gimme a new ship."

or

"Whew! Okay, that settles it. He really was incompetent - he should have seen that backhand slash coming. Bring in the next case."
