I think I recall Kate saying something similar in how somethings required her to overact to make fictional things come accross as real while underplaying others. Seven & the Doc. did have larger than life personalities, even Neelix to some degree. Kes was the only one that was kinda subdued.

I had heard that years ago. That the "humans" were told to downplay so that the "non-humans" would seem more real. Or some crap like that.

Which explains why the show slowed down, why the EMH and Seven roles expanded (they were the only ones with emotions), and why Janeway seemed schizo (she was only allowed to show extreme emotions--ONLY extreme ones).

Makes me feel bad for the fans and the actors. Imagine being an actor and being told to underplay to the point of insults from fans for being "wooden." I suppose it did help the directing careers of McNeil and Dawson.

I guess that's why beyond the characters powers, I didn't warm up to her too much. I didn't see how the character would mature over time if at 2 she was already more mature than the adults around her. IMO Kes needed to be a little more exaggerated.

Yes, the way Lien portrayed Kes made her seem much more mature than she probably should have. Mature beyond her years?

Kate is ham. She over acts all the time. In that she and Bill Shatner have a lot in common. So, I think her saying that was probably just her covering. Ditto for Wang here.

He and Beltran were always wooden actors to me. Coming up with an excuse would not surprise me at all since I'm pretty sure that Wang is young enough to be internet literate enough to read posts from places like here about his non-acting acting.

I have to disagree here. I see no problem in Kes being more mature than her years. She was an alien and can't be measured exactly by human standards. Maybe the Ocampa were supposed to be more mature in young age than a Human counterpart between 18 and 25.

I don't think Beltran is a wooden actor either. There were many episodes in seasons 1-3 when Beltran was given the chance to do something with the Chakotay character and he did a good job then.

As for Wang, his character was never really given the chance to shine. Kim is actually better in many of the books and it would have been interesting to see what Wang's acting in any of those stories.

I would also add season 4 to that list. Even though the season saw the introduction of 7, it had to contend with the decreased role of B'Elanna due to Roxanne's real pregnancy. The last time I went through season 4, I was "surprised" to see how much Chak was evident, and assumed the two were related.

You're right about that. It was a long time a go I watched season 4 but I remember that Chakotay did have some good moments, especially in "Nemesis" which was a great episode.

The point was, how were we supposed to know Kes was growing up if she's already acts more mature than the adults around her? Not to mention that Trek compares all the aliens by human standards, so we can find them identifiable. Even the EMH is measured by our POV.

Not to turn this into a Kes thread but if that's so, how do you tell the difference from 2 year old Kes from 9 year old Kes if she behaves just as mature as the 30 to 50 year olds around her? She was nearly as mature acting as Tuvok.
 
If not more so in some ways. She clearly had a better grasp of emotions than Tuvok does ("Resolutions").

You measure someone's maturity based on how they behave and interact with the people around them, yes.

What I'm saying is that interaction, to me, seemed more mature than it should have been given her age and general life experience.
