David Warner and Liam Cunningham in Gatiss' episode

Liam Cunningham was originally considered for the Doctor, back in 1994. Philip Segal's initial choice before Paul McGann auditioned.

David Warner had often been linked to the role during the Wilderness Years and got to play an alternative 3rd Doctor, in two unbound Big Finish audios.

I imagine everybody here knows who David Warner is...

He's The Doctor and Steel.* Only person who can say that!

Just FYI said episode has just finished shooting completely (or almost completely) in studio and is supposed to be set entirely onboard a submarine.

*And a bazillion other characters in various Big Finish productions.

Steel? As in "Sapphire and Steel"? Unless were talking some latter day audio version, I'm pretty sure that was David McCallum, rather than David Warner.

Yes, but so was David Warner.

BTW I can't recommend them highly enough. They're incredibly dark, even more so than the TV series, in terms of what S&S will allow happen to people in order to win. They feature some mind-bending twists that could only work in the audio format and an ending that almost demands you go back and listen to all fifteen stories again now you've got the big picture.

Great news about David Warner. I've always been a fan. I mean, good lord, the mans been in everything! :)

Shame its another Gatiss episode though.

I know I give him a hard time, but really, apart from the one first season story, and his work on Sherlock, I've found his tales to be a major disappointment. I actually like him better as an actor than a writer.

It's about bloody time David Warner is on Doctor Who! I've lost count of the number of audio plays he's done for Big Finish and every single one he's done has been an absolute treat. Hell, Unbound: Sympathy for the Devil remains one of my all-time favorite Big Finish plays and a large part of that is Warner's performance as the alternate Third Doctor.

Unfortunately, I have to agree on all counts with Cutter John in regards to Mark Gatiss but hopefully his writing for Doctor Who has improved because of his great work on Sherlock.

not many. Simon Pegg, is one of the few.

there's a few more who've been in Who and SW, thanks to SW using a load of Brits from filming the classic trilogy here...

Does anyone know off hand how many actors have appeared in bothDW and ST.

About a dozen, depending on whether you count being in the unfinished Shada or in the Cushing movies as having been in Dr Who.

About 20-ish if you count the BF audios

If you mean Barrie Ingham when you refer to the Cushing movies, don't forget he was also in The Myth Makers.

Memory Alpha lists twenty eight actors who have been in both ST and Who (including Torchwood). These include Noel Clarke, in the upcoming film, both W. Morgan and Mark Shepard, and of course Deep Roy, who probably holds some sort of record for the sheer number of different SF series he's been in.

Was thinking of Barrie Ingham, but wasn't counting Torchwood, on account of, you know, it being a different show to Dr Who!

looking over that list, it's 13. because the rest of that list is (frankly in my eyes) cheating since it's Torchwood and many are from the US-centric and US-part-funded Miracle Day season.

At first I had my wires crossed and was thinking Liam Cunningham was the guy in Oasis (Gallagher) which would've been an interesting guest star. :)

And for more connectiony goodness, Warner, Gatiss and Pegg were all in The League Of Gentlemen's Apocalypse - as was Steve Pemberton, who was in the Silence In The Library two parter.
