David Tennant leaves DW after the specials

According to the Press Association - doubtless intended to be announced at the National Television Awards tonight. It's a shame he's not staying for season 5 (and just thinking of the money they offered - I wouldn't turn that down!) but he's going out on a high, at peak popularity, and then there's a whole new broom thing for season 5 of the likes we haven't seen for a very long time.

I just pity whoever has to follow him, because DT has given the most definitive Doctor since Tom Baker, and will be an amazingly difficult act to follow

ETA- He just announced it live at the NTAs while picking up the Outstanding Drama Performance award

Just seen him say it.

For better or worse Moffat is being given the same completely blank slate that RTD had four years ago.

I hear Russel Brand is looking for work...

So farewell then, David Tennant. It was an announcement we'd been half-expecting, but a sad announcement at that.

Like Chris Eccleston before you, you were fantastic. :bolian:

Screw picking a new Doctor... at least in the usual sense... I say continue with the character of Doc 10 and only replace the actor playing him. Simply replace Tennant with Top Gear's Richard Hammond. The Hamster has the same general look, a fairly similar demeanor, and his lack of height could be explained as the result of a brief stop on an extremely high gravity world.;)

Fan casting to BEGIN? Dude, it's been going on for freaking YEARS!

Tennant's tenure will forever be seen as premature, but best to go out on top rather than having stayed well after you should have left, for the good of your career AND for the show. I agree that Tennant has arguably been the most memorable Doctor since Tom Baker, but everyone's gotta go and having a new Doctor for a new head writer to play with makes perfect sense. I look forward to both Moffat's writing of a new role as much as I will the new actor's intepretation of it, whoever it turns out to be.

Personally, I won't speculate. Even as a Canadian fan for over twenty five years (and I'm 32!), every time a new Doctor is introduced I've had no idea who it was. Eccleston and Tennat joined that list, so I'm just gonna let it roll on as it has since 2005. :)

I think this is good news. Good to go out on a high note rather than be in the role till he can't stand it any more.
But best of luck to David Tennant in the future. Hopefully he wonn't have weird fanboys following him around ruining his stuff in the future.

I remember after superman died... the four months that was the ongoing saga's of "A world without Superman" and "Funeral for a friend" and "Reign of the Supermen" were just ball bustingly tragic as everyone scattered to full the vacuum...

What did the Master say that one time? "I can scarcely imagine a universe in it without the Doctor"?

fancasting.... Julian Cleary or maybe Jason Donavan.

God I'm old.

Worzel Gummage and All Creature's Great and Small.

But I get your point.

Aw, I'm sad. I had hoped for another season with Tennant. Three years just seems a bit too short to me. Oh well. His reasoning is sound, though.
He'll probably always stay my favourite Doctor. I'm looking forward to the specials and to the new Doctor.

My hope is that they either don't show the regeneration or if the last special is much later in the life of Tennant's doctor. The one good thing about Doctor Who is that should a previous Doctor ever wish to return, there is plenty of time for adventures we haven't seen yet.

Nah. New actor - New Doctor. 'Tis the way of things (OK, not with regen 1. Sort of.) And I'm glad that it is.

:D
