David Tennant as Doctor Who

I don't like to rank the Doctors in order of preference either. It just doesn't work as I can always find something good about a specific incarnation even if he is not my top pick for absolute favorite.

You'll never get 100% consensus on this question. Before Tennant came along, my personal list was Pertwee, Tom Baker, Eccleston. Tennant pushed Pertwee to #2. And right now Matt Smith is tied with Tennant.

You'll get people who can't stand the modern Doctors and think the epitome remains Troughton.

There's plenty for all!

Alex

^ This. And the great thing is, if you don't like the current one, there'll be another one along in a few years, who hopefully you will like.*

*Admittedly I had to wait from 1983 to 1996...

Tennant was a great doctor. I think I'm starting to like Smith better but I would rank it Tennant, Smith and Ecclestian, but it's not that far from each other. And I think all 3 doctors have been really good. Tennant probably took the most influence of the past doctors into his performance. As far as all time goes I'm not sure any of them can crack the top 3 of Tom Baker, Pertwee and Troughton but I like them. I definitely think all 3 deserve to be in the top part of the doctors list.

Out of the recent incarnations i.e. 9-11. I think Tennant is the best of the lot. Of all time that is a harder questions.

and slightly off topic, shouldn't the thread be Called "David Tennant as The Doctor?"

Tennant is "My Doctor." I hold him in the same regard many do Tom Baker. Although I was introduced to Doctor Who through Eccleston, Tennant was the first one I really got to know, and as a result when I think of the Doctor it's Tennant who immediately jumps to mind.

But of course all the Doctors are awesome. I really don't think there's one I don't like. While there are some Doctors that are sadled with subpar stories, the actors themselves usually deliver an excellent performance as the Doctor and that redeems things to an extent.

Same with me. I love all the Doctors, but Tennant is the one I think of when I think of the Doctor. This is, of course, completely subjective, there is no such thing as "the best Doctor", there's simply the one you actually like the most, and that's really about familiarity. So, yeah, Tennant is "My Doctor", too.

I am growing to like Matt Smith's performance, but will always remember the fun I had with David Tennant.
I think Matt won me over with his second season, and I have a particular fondness for Amelia Pond. Rory ain't too bad wither! :rommie:

I dunno, for some reason Smith just hasn't grown on me yet. I think maybe its because so much of the spotlight the past two series has been on Amy and River. He just hasn't really had that many chances to develop as a character.

I like his character just fine. But I agree River has had too much focus on her.
I grew to like Smith with his second season, and like Amy Pond well enough. I will probably shed a tear when she goes.

Does anyone read the comic strips featuring the Doctor and his companions? Can you iamgine any of 10's comic run being actual episodes, other than The Lodger?

I think my favorite is, and will always be McGann. Sure he was stuck with a regeneration story that only allowed him to fully be the Doctor at the end, but when he did regain his memory he was just as good as the Doctor as anyone who came before, or since. The TARDIS control room is also my favorite of the lot as well.

Tennant though, is the first Doctor to truly pull me into the show. Sure I started with Eccleston (like many did), but his "working class" Doctor never really clicked with me.

For decades, Jon Pertwee was the best Doc to me. But, after DT wrapped up his tenure, I decided to make a change. While I've enjoyed Matt Smith so far, I'm still holding to Tennant as the best.

Like the James Bond performers, there will always be those who have their favorites...(mine are: Connery, Dalton, and Craig).

In regards to "Who," I feel that Tennant was a tad overrated...and many times I had a hard time understanding what he was saying. On the other hand, from what I've seen of Matt Smith...he is more "Doctor-ish"....to be a bit vague.

My favorite will always be Tom Baker, because he was so random with his comedic actions...and I'm a particular fan of his stories. Another I'm also a fan of is Colin Baker, but I'm still wondering whether I'm a fan of Colin Baker...or Nicola Bryant?

Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee were good(although some of their serials would drag, depending on the story); Troughton also had that bumbling comedic timing, and Pertwee was the serious, action Doctor. (I still have to wonder--like with C. Baker and Bryant--whether I'm watching for Troughton or Wendy Padbury?)

I am relatively new to Who and of the Doctors I have watched Tennant is my favorite and I hated to see him go. Smith is growing on me though.

It is a shame that McGann didn't get another movie or a series. I really liked the film, even if it did go a bit wonky with some ideas like the part human business. McGann's performance was fun and a really good bridge between old and new Who Doctors.

Just basing this on 2005 onwards. Eccleston was fantastic. He is what really got me into DW. I wonder if my opinion would have changed if had stayed on longer with some of those Season 2 stories as I find Season 2 onward to be a bit weaker than 1.

Tennant is well... very Doctory and that's ok with me. I always seem him as an actor who loved playing the Doctor because he himself is such a huge fan. He really gets himself into it.

Smith. I really like Smith I have to say. I will wait until his run is up to rank him with Tennant and Eccleston but he had me from the line "must be one hell of a scary crack in your wall". Series 6 he hasn't been able to shine as much as series 5 but overall I find the character a bit more likable and less arrogant and that's a lot to do with the writing.

Tennant is still my favourite Doctor. I liked Eccleston, too, and think he left us too early. Likewise, I wouldn't have minded another regular series with Tennant. I haven't been able to really get into the Moffat/Smith era and I gave up watching after the first half of last season.
Currently, I'm continuing to work my way through the old show, so while Tennant is still the face of the new show, right now when I think of Doctor Who I tend to think of the Tom Baker era first because that's where I'm at right now. My second favourite Doctor is Jon Pertwee but Tom Baker is really great, too.
