David Tennant as Doctor Who

Witj the dust finally settling on his era as The Doctor, I am curious who here still regard David Tennant as Ten to be the best of the NuWho Doctors or at least the first decent Doctor in a long time?
Discuss stories, companions, guest stars, villians, and of course the Doctor himself as played by David Tennant.
I rate him just a bit higher than Christopher Eccleston and Matt Smith. He could have gone ona year longer and I would have been happy. With the change of leads happening the way it did, I felt a drop in interest in the series until recently with the first steps towards the 50th anniversary next year ie the choosing of a new companion.

I liked the Tenth Doctor--honestly, there isn't a Doctor that I don't like--but I never considered him the greatest ever and thought he left the program at a good time.

Eccleston is still my favourite of the NuWho Doctors, although I also like all of them... well, almost. I can't stand the Fifth and only watch a select few of his serials.

Tennant had his moments but at times he was just too "emo" for my tastes.

The best? No, I can't say I do. Like him more the Eccs, less than Smith. Like him more than the Bakers, McCoy, McGann and Hartnell. Less than Davison, Troughton and Pertwee.

I don't think anyone could answer that question honestly until Doctor Who is done and over with. I have to admit I am not as familiar with the rest of The Doctors as some fans but of the new series Matt Smith is my favorite.

David Tennant is my favorite of the three so far since the series returned in 2005, but overall Tom Baker is my favorite Doctor.

Tennant is "My Doctor." I hold him in the same regard many do Tom Baker. Although I was introduced to Doctor Who through Eccleston, Tennant was the first one I really got to know, and as a result when I think of the Doctor it's Tennant who immediately jumps to mind.

But of course all the Doctors are awesome. I really don't think there's one I don't like. While there are some Doctors that are sadled with subpar stories, the actors themselves usually deliver an excellent performance as the Doctor and that redeems things to an extent.

Tennant started out great but RTD's just kept degrading the tenth doctor into a vengeful god.

The tenth doctor in RTD's eyes was the BEST!!!! He could do anything! and if you disagree RTD will slap you!

He could hold his regeneration long enough to see every single companion:rolleyes:

"I don't want to go..."

By then it was basically tennant and RTD's saying goodbye not the tenth doctor.

It wasn't really fair to Matt Smith.

"No one can be better than the tenth doctor! No ONE!!!!"

I definitely do - and not just of the nuWho Doctors. Eccleston is a close second. Smith has not grown on me.

I have said this in other similar threads before, Chris Eccleston will always be my first Doctor, and he was fantastic...but David is my favourite Doctor. Matt would be second if I was ranking the three New Who Doctors.

Of the three doctors, I like them from best to least favorite pretty much in order: Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith. As for Tennant, the other night I watched "Time Crash" on Youtube, and was reminded of the good times I had with his Doctor. That's actually one of my top 5 favorite 10th doctor episodes.

Tennant was a very good Doctor, but by no means the best Doctor. I took a little while to warm to him, and oddly I still think he was too young when he got the gig (despite being older than Smith who I conversely don't think was too old) and his first year was a bit inconsistent ranging from the great (his reaction to seeing Sarah Jane was magical, I don't think you were acting there David were you :) ) to the cringe worthy (I ain't afraid of no ghost, the gurning, the acting like a teenage girl around Rose). He calmed down thankfully, and when he was good he was very good (the Family of Blood 2 parter in particular).

The quote EMH uses in his sig sums him up perfectly though, he is Tigger, bouncing up and down and practically shouting "I'm the Doctor! Can you see, I'M THE DOCTOR!!!"

When he toned it down he was very good but too often he seemed to be trying too hard (which makes sense, in part because RTD's show was more in your face, but also because I think as a fan he didn't want to screw it up.)

I was heartbroken when he regenerated, and the "I don't want to go" line gets me every time, but I'm glad he went when he did, and in contrast to the time it took to warm to Tennant, Matt Smith pretty much had me at Geronimo.

He's probably a top five Doctor for me, maybe fourth after Smith, Davison and Troughton, maybe fifth because he and Eccleston kinda swap places a lot.

Well, shit, I wasn't going to post just yet, but now I have, too.

I love that quote because it really sums up The Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh so well. For those who don't know, the quote comes from Tor.com's The Twelve Doctors of Christmas which featured fans reviewing each Doctor back in 2010.

As for The Tenth Doctor, I honestly think I need to rewatch his era to properly rejudge him. I admit I was very much caught up into at the time but I did see some of the weaknesses even then (pretty much everything Starkers already covered, particularly the gurning). He had some absolutely amazing performances and absolutely abysmal ones, too.

Right now, I think he's number six for me, after Fourth, Second, Eleventh, Eighth, and Seventh, having slipped has time has passed.

I really liked Eccleston's Doctor and was gutted when he left so soon. As such, while I did like Tennant's take, it took me a while to reallly enjoy his performance and not constantly wonder how Chris would have played the scene.

However, by about the end of his second season in the TARDIS, maybe his third, I had to admit that he had really made the part his own. Yes, the hyperactivity could be a bit much and, as Charlie Brooker said, at times it was like being on holiday with someone who knows absolutely everything about the place you're visiting and wants to make sure you know they know this ('Oh, it's YOU!'). But the sense of wonder, the comedy timing, the ability to change tone in a flash, the general charisma. He was brilliant.

I was very saddened when he decided to leave, even though I know no Doctor stays forever. The 'I don't want to go...' delivery was heartbreaking.

For all of that, I am really enjoying Matt Smith and, much to my surprise, he almost immediately surpassed both Eccleston and Tennant in my view. I think it's remarkable just how the show has managed to snag three successive brillant leads and how each has managed to top the other. I hope that Matt stays on for a long time, as I do wonder how many times they can manage to pull this off.

While I don't feel comfortable ranking the various Doctors, I do think David is pretty high on my list. And definately my favorite of the new Doctors.

Tennant is still my favorite Doctor, but I did feel that he was let down by the writing on a number of occasions. Or maybe it's just my biases. I didn't think Planet of the Dead, Waters of Mars, and most of The End of Time were all that strong, which was unfortunate, since they were Tennant's last outings as the Doctor.

When I go back to watch his episodes, I tend to hit The Girl in the Fireplace, School Reunion, and Blink most often. The only ones I really skip are Voyage of the Damned and the Utopia-Last of the Time Lords three-parter, all of which I found to be really unpleasant and just not fun to watch.

Matt Smith is my favourite new series Doctor, with Eccleston not far behind. Tennant is generally a fine actor, but I found his performance irritating ultimately, with all its mugging and mockney wanker characterization.

Tom Baker's my favourite though.
