David S Goyer to write next Batman movie!

Last week, there was an announcement that WB/DC would soon be moving ahead with their various superhero projects. At least part of that seems to be coming true with the announcement that David Goyer, writer of Batman Begins, will be co-writing the next movie. Goyer provided an outline for its follow-up, The Dark Knight, but didn't script it. It was scripted by Jonah Nolan, brother of director Chris, who helmed both movies.

Goyer recently left Flashforward (he was its show-runner) and will write the next outing for Mr Wayne's alter-ego with said J Nolan. No word yet on whether Chris is to return but with his little bro' on board, it's hard to imagine that he won't be involved in some capacity, even if it's just as a producer, like Tim Burton with Batman Forever.

I hope this is true, even though I'd rather Goyer just stick with story outlining responsibilities and leaving Jonathan Nolan to singlehandedly write it. However, regardless of the report's validity, I'm sure Goyer and my dawg J-Nol will be working on the film in some capacity.

I like Goyer because I credit him with choosing Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul as villains for Batman Begins. I want a writer who can think outside of the Joker-Riddler-Penguin-Catwoman complex.

I actually heard it was WB who mandated new villains for Batman Begins.

Hopefully they don't ruin a good villain like they did with Two-Face...but it'll be interesting to see who does take the director's chair. Nolan did a good job with the franchise.

I don't mind the Joker, Riddler, Penguin, and Catwoman if they are done well, but I see your point. Certainly The Dark Knight showed us a different Joker on film. Two-Face was a different take as well.

I'd like to see the Riddler, but make it a more serious character and not a Frank Gorshin / Jim Carrey silly silly remake. Bring on David Tennant! ;)

I have a hard time seeing them doing a convincing Catwoman or Penguin in this "version" of Batman. Okay, maybe Penguin. Catwoman felt forced and cheesy in Batman Returns, I really can't see a way to do it that would not turn it into more of a comic book story.

The complex I want them to avoid in the third film is the Batman Forever-Batman and Robin complex. Let's take two dark films and make the third and forth ones silly! Holy rusted metal Batman!

I remember after watching The Dark Knight and having a discussion with my friend about Lucius Fox's line "It'll do fine against cats" when he and Bruce Wayne discuss his new armor. I seemed to think it was suggesting Catwoman's appearance in the next film (almost like Bruce's line "two-faced phonies" could be seen as suggesting Two-Face's forthcoming appearance in Batman Begins) but he seemed to think it was a line suggesting that Nolan wouldn't touch Catwoman. It'll be interesting to see if she's featured in the next film.

Nolan has also gone on record saying that he thinks the Penguin would be a hard character to do by going by his realistic view on the Batman universe. I don't necessarily agree with him -- maybe if you're going by the character as portrayed in Batman Returns, but going by how he's been portrayed in the comics, the Penguin should be one of the easier characters to conform to Nolan's gritty, realistic take on the character. The Penguin is essentially a mobster, and you could conceivably tone down some of his more flamboyant characteristics, but I digress.

Goyer once went on record saying that a completely original villain could be in the works for the next film, which would be interesting to see. Either way, I am just eager to see what Nolan, Goyer and company come up with for the third film, original or comic-book villain or not.

I recommend the Black Mask if they're going to use a newer villain. However, I disagree with using a completely new one. I think audiences and fans don't like that.

I vote for Hugo Strange. Yes, he's obscure, but with Batman being hunted by the cops and labeled a vigilante, it opens the door for Strange to come in and fill the vacuum left by Batman. He could take the "suspected murderer" route one step further and actually go on a murderous rampage, and now not only would Batman have to clear his name, but also stop Strange from further tarnishing it.

Batman has such a rich rogues' gallery that I think it would be a shame to use an all-new villain. Reminds me of the late 1970s Spider-man tv series or the forgettable villains in Superman 3 or 4.

I think The Penguin can be done quite easily. A short, fat, ugly gangster (Paul Giamatti) who dresses a little eccentrically and has an unfortunate quack-like laughing sneer. He might hate the nickname applied to him by his goons (think the original Scarface).

I love David Tennant (nearly cried during his regeneration scene) but while he can do understated (not least of all during his DW swansong) I'm pretty sure that his take on the Riddler would be in the mould of Gorshin and Carrey. I want to see the Riddler played as a creepy, smart, smug sociopath. Someone like David Hyde-Pierce or the guy who plays Ben Linus in Lost.

I would go with the premise that they set up at the end of "The Dark Knight" that Batman himself is the villain just to do something completely different...the police are continuing their manhunt for Batman who has had to adapt to working completely alone without Gordon or Fox as a resource for information. Bruce decides to adapt his "Matches" Malone personality to infiltrate the mob and underground crime scene which has started to resurrect it's self under a new leader and since Batman has had to keep a low profile. If we needed to use a villain I'd love them to use Black Mask. Maybe introduce Talia as well and have her lead the League of Shadows and them aiding Black Mask and feeding the propaganda against Batman. I'm just glad that there seems to be movement finally on this if this news is true.

I would welcome any original villain that David S. Goyer might create for the next Batman film. Goyer was co-screenwriter of 1998's Dark City. Imagine the Dark Knight battling super-powered villains like Dark City's sinister Strangers. Sadly, such a concept would run counter to Nolan's "realistic" sensibility.

Maybe I should brace myself for another Penguin or Riddler story, one where they probably steal jewels or museum artifacts. That's never been done before, has it?

King Tut and Egghead, played by Patton Oswalt and Ben Kingsley.

Fuck it, bring Scarecrow back. Plus, Zach Galifianakis as the Penguin.

"Third Batman Film Has Real Progress; Internet Fangasms."

:p

Personally, I hope the movie has less of this and more of this.

In fairness, Scarecrow was the top choice for a "fifth" Bat-movie since 1997.

I agree with you, Jackson. Beyond Penguin being my favorite Bat-villain, he is probably the most realistic villain you can put into a Batman film.

I was serious about Scarecrow, even if it's just another cameo.

Funny thing, King Tut, the comics had a guy named Maxie Zeus who thought he was Zeus. Oddly, created by Denny O'Neil, who created Ra's al Ghul.

There's actually one other villain from Batman Begins still around, he only made a brief appearance.
