David Mack, a question...

...In Destiny Book 2, on page 127, where Sam Bowers is talking to Ezri Dax, reference is made to "that crisis with the alternate universe, and the fallout that came after it". I was wondering what crisis was being discussed, and am assuming it is detailed in another book, but don't know which one. Can you clarify?

On a personal note, I am 3/4ths of the way through Book 2 and just purchased Book 3; moving right along, and am enjoying the story thus far.

It's a reference to the Post-Finale DS9's current Mirror Universe storyline.

That was a reference that editor Marco Palmieri asked me to put in, so that a later DS9 post-finale novel could dramatize it. I imagine he had something specific in mind, but as usual, he elected not to tell me what it was...

Lazarus is back . . . and this time in octuplet form.

JD, thanks for the tip; had read that the Intendant is back, but since there wasn't mention made of the Mirror Universe in the book, but an alternate universe, I didn't think of that possible connection. Did Ezri Dax have anything to do with the Intendant's return?

Its a tad complicated, its from DS9 Post Fiction, of course... but especially the latest books: "Olympus Descending" (David R. George III), David Mack's "Warpath" and Olivia Woods' "Fearful Symmetry" and upcoming "the Soul Key."

The MU is the AU that was dealt with in the series, as opposed to the other AUs that Trek Lit has encountered in books, there were some SCE stories and the AU omnibus out etc.

Well, I don't think the term Mirror Universe has ever actually been used on the show. So pretty much anytime a show that has dealt with MU refers to The Alternate Universe, it's most likely the MU.

Thanks, Marie1 and JD...I have those books somewhere but haven't cracked them yet; my only Trek readings of late have been in the TNG relaunch/Destiny trilogy, and the excellent Myriad Universe trades.

It does stand to reason that characters would refer to it as an "alternate universe" than a "mirror universe", though.

You are welcome...

I think... I think at one point we used to use the term "mirror" because DS9 only showed that one other universe, and most people were very different from who they are in the "real" universe. Then it became "alternate" when the books got into other universes, and mirror isn't really... accurate?

I hope you like the DS9PF books! I've really enjoyed them... :)

We use the term mirror because that was the primary metaphor by which the episodes were named, from TOS' "Mirror, Mirror", DS9's "Through the Looking Glass" and "Shattered Mirror", to ENT's "In a Mirror, Darkly". It's an outside-the-box referent.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Ahh... I see. Thanks.

I guess if someone was in an MU and saw themselves... I just tend to think of them as alternate/parallel...

Just looked over the script and Rom never calls it that there; he pretty much consistently refers to it as the 'alternate' universe. That said, it's been a while since I've seen the broadcast episode itself, so you may still be right...

No, Trent, you're right. Rom made a big point of calling it "the alternate universe" and trying to parse exactly how the term "alternate" did or didn't apply.
