David in knife fights

Khan 2.0

Commodore
Commodore
In II he attacks Kirk with the knife. After a struggle Kirk disarms him

In III David takes on the knife wielding Klingon like his father did with him..

Wonder if that was intentional?

I never thought about it, but it's an interesting question. One thing I took away from both scenes is that David has the same instinct to rush into situations as his father but not his father's training and experience, which is likely what got him killed.

I'll go so far as to state that yes, the knife fights are intentional, with David Marcus. Anyone can fire a phaser, whether they're a warrior or a wimp. But a knife fight separates the warriors from the wimps, does it not? The only reason why the knife "fight" went on for as long as it did in The Wrath of Khan, even with Kirk's being old factoring in, is because he's 'afraid' of hurting this nerd.

In The Search for Spock, the Klingons are the warriors, of course, so their use of knifes is implicit. Confronted by them, David had no choice but to accept dealing with them on their terms. All he has, otherwise, is reason to try to convince them, otherwise. Obviously, that's out of the question. Be assured that the knife thing is not a matter of convenience, or even a money-$aver, really. It's all about machismo ... how much of a Man you are ...

C'mon, David. You could have done better. Your dad kicked an Andorian's ass in a knife fight, or he would have if he would not have done that ridiculous flying Kirk kick onto his rear end.

C'mon, David. You could have done better.

Really? Could he have?

David is not a trained Starfleet officer like his father. David is a scientist, and that's it. You can't expect him to be able to hold his own in a fight. Kirk has the advantage of extensive military training, which David never got.

The reason David died the way he did, was because he wanted to sacrifice himself to atone for his sins (i.e. protomatter). He knew the Klingons were going to kill Saavik, and this was his chance for redemption.

David should've let Savvik get stabbed. Then before she dies he lets her transfer her katra into him. Then on Vulcan after the Spock bones thing he transfers her into a vulcan girl who gets overwrit with savvikk (one that looks more like Kirstie alley)

In the first instance, he had both the knife and the drop on the person he attacked.

In the next movie, he's unarmed and has to act immediately to stop someone else being killed, going up against a much stronger opponent trained to kill.

He had the instincts of David Kirk, he had the talent of David Marcus. In otherwords, he had the drive to fight but not the ability.
