David (Harry Potter) Yates to direct Doctor Who The Movie!

he said he's not interested in having his face plastered across lunch-boxes, not that he doesn't want to do a TV series. it's the merchandising not the length of the role.
I don't think it's just the merchandising. Some of his comments have contradicted what he has said earlier.

And I find the lunchbox comment moot since he is now in the next star trek movie.

so do i, i mean, i'm not seeing it anyway after the last stinkfest, but come on; how creatively bankrupt would that be? bad enough when Nemesis ripped off II, but to essentially remake it would worse when the whole stated point of a reboot was to tell new stories.

But it will be a new story given none of the events that led up to
TWOK ever happened in the new Timeline. They might give us a riff on Space Seed, but doubt there'll be Marla McGivers in this story, no Ceti Alpha V (or VI ;) ) no Genesis, no deranged mission of vengence on Khan's behalf.

We don't have to worry about Benedict playing the Doctor anytime soon. If you've been paying attention it's been pretty evident the next Doctor will either be black or a woman, because the pressure has gotten pretty intense in the last couple years. Or maybe they'll split the difference and we'll discover that "Liz 10" is actually "Liz 12" if you know what I mean...

Whoopi Goldberg for the Doctor. Let's cover all the bases. Well, most of them.

Well... I'm thinking more the lines of Sophie Okonedo.

Not that I expect 100% that they'll change the Doctor's ethnicity and gender when Matt Smith leaves. But there were some pretty loud grumbles when Paterson Joseph (whoever he is - I just know him as a fleeting guest star who played an a-hole in an Eccleston episode) was allegedly "passed over" as the 11th Doctor (even though by all accounts he may never have been in the running), and ever since Neil Gaiman established that some Time Lords can change sex, and RTD had the Doctor affirm in Death of the Doctor that a skin color change is possible, everyone's just been assuming that the Twelfth Doctor is going to be odd man (or woman) out from the rest...

And lest you think I'm pushing the thread on a tangent, if Yates ever does make his movie, the same pressures will apply (perhaps even stronger if the BBC doesn't cast a non-Caucasian or a woman for the part in the meantime).

Personally, I don't care. As long as a) the change of gender is part of a storyline and not considered "normal" for some Time Lords because I refuse to accept that a future incarnation of Romana or Susan could conceivably look like Ron Jeremy  and b) whoever they cast is truly the best choice for the role.

For the Series, yea, I'm thinking it's more possible now than ever before. For a movie, I'm not sure they'd go so bold. A movie you only get one chance if you bomb, with the series, if it's not popular out of the gate, the show or the audience can adjust (Showrunner may decide it's just fine, and let the audience adjust, and if they don't, then the Regeneration will be a quick one, and the show can recover). Once on the show and it doesn't hurt the show, the Movie change would be less risky. Remember, though BBC and British backed/run/labored, it is stationed in Hollywood, so, there's gonna be some decisions made according to risk they present of reducing profitability.

*All of this, of course, is MHO

there's an aside comment in SFX's write up of the official con that when Moff put it to the crowd about changing the Doctor's gender very few were in favour. plus Moff's said in the past, it's hard enough telling kids this is the Doctor now when he changes why complicate it further by making him a woman?

Who? Who is doing the pressuring? Let us go forth and slap them up the side of the head. I'm with the Moff on this. These people need to step forward and say why, and give some VERY GOOD reasons.

The pressure for a female or black Doctor is no greater now than it ever has been. It's always kicking around in the background, but the BBC usually seem more concerned about getting the best actor for the job rather than ticking ethnic and/or gender boxes. Which is exactly how it should be.

^ Why let the facts get in the way? After all, it's soooooooo cool to have a rant against 'political correctness' - even if the latter happens to have no relevance whatsoever to the discussion at hand!

relax, it's skidoo, he frequently makes sweeping claims or grandiose statements with precious little to back it up.

OK asshole I've reported this to the mods. Since I've just been called a liar, there is no point in me posting here anymore. I thought this place had grown up since the days when anyone who defended Enterprise was being called a c*nt. I guess I was wrong.

Enjoy the discussion. If you can't be bothered to do simple research then I don't have time for any of you.

calhoun, let's cool it a bit, yes? No need to be getting personal about a simple difference of opinion. You're straying off topic, so please steer yourself back on.

Infraction for flaming

LOL are you serious? You have no idea what the BBC is about. :p

What you said is a credit to the DW production team, not to the BBC... if the BBC had it's way all sorts of boxes would have been ticked by now (fulfilling the demographic requirements of license fee payers!), but whilst Doctor Who is bringing in the dollar (not just the pound :p) it's production team has more say and control over the creative direction of the series then most do. Remember a TV series called Heartbeat? OK, not broadcast on the BBC (it was ITV)... but cancelled for this very reason - it didn't tick boxes... and the production team refused to tick those boxes. Political correctness is it's own worse enemy, especially when that political correctness is forced in with the sole purpose of 'ticking boxes'.
