David Goyer to write new "Superman" movie

Even though I feel Brainiac is waaaaay too overused.
He's never been used in a live action feature, though, and there's a lot of eye-popping stuff that could be done with him in a big budget film. Also, if Goyer does write the film I think it's quite likely that there'll be some other supervillains in the mix, too, in smaller parts.

Agreed. I'm not sure how Brainiac's been overexposed when he's never appeared in a single SUPERMAN feature film.

He wasn't on the old George Reeves show. He wasn't on LOIS & CLARK. And he wasn't in all that many SMALLVILLE episodes . . . .

Compared to Luthor, he's been pretty much invisible as far as the general public is concerned!

^He was on The Animated Series quite a bit, but I don't know how much the general public saw of that. Still I agree it's high time he was used in a feature.

The trades usually don't run information without some kind of confirmation from the studios, so the fact that Variety ran the story is significant. Goyer may not have signed on the dotted line yet to write the screenplay - which is probably why AICN and Hitfix are getting denials - but it's likely close to a done deal that Goyer will be involved in writing a treatment and/or script.

I really hope they don't use the Brainiac from STAS, who felt like just another Borg/Terminator ripoff. I want Supes to go up against a villain who actually has some kind of personality.

I can't wait til something a little more official comes out.

The Man Of Steel???

Just call it SUPERMAN!!!

:D

At the risk of sounding like a live-action snob, I don't think cartoons count where much of the movie-going audience is concerned.

(Waits to be flamed by animation fans.)

When I speak of Brainiac's overuse I speak of the comics, but also the animated series. How many versions of Brainiac have appeared in the comics over the past decade?

Enough to make his "Who's Who" entry a nightmare, I admit. But he's virgin territory as far as the movies are concerned.

And the average moviegoer hasn't read all those comics.

The first thing that I thought of when I read this story was wow Luthor and Brainiac and "Man of Steel" again this seems similar to what Singer, Harris, and Daugherty came up with and was thinking if Goyer is doing his own thing or using elements of their story? I have faith in Goyer's ability as a writer, he did Batman Begins a service. I'm still fond of his original idea for Blade III where it was going to take place some twenty years after Blade II and feature Blade alone fighting against an apparent vampire victory. His The Flash script and his Supermax script are among the most requested among fan boy collectors. He seems to be one lucky man as well if the reports are true from a couple weeks ago that he's started writing Batman 3.

Actually I heard Goyer isn't writing Batman 3 but merely consulting on the story with Jonathan Nolan writing the script similar to The Dark Knight.

Different writers can take the same two villains and come up with substantially different stories. Moreover, a new screenplay that doesn't include Jason, Richard or the whole backstory between Superman and Lois as presented in SR would be a very different story to the one Singer was cooking up for a sequel.

In any event, I don't think Singer and his writers even got beyond the initial stages of outlining a story. There's no actual script for Singer's prospective sequel as far as I'm aware.

Well, more fuel for the fire: Apparently Thomas Tull is downplaying things, and not only is David Goyer confirmed to write The Man of Steel, but he will be joined by The Dark Knight scribe Jonathan Nolan, who will be co-writing! Christopher Nolan is only expected to be an executive producer at this time. This is pretty incredible!

EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: IGN has heard from reliable sources that Tull is downplaying this report. Goyer is in fact on the project, but not only that -- his The Dark Knight co-writer Jonah Nolan will also be scripting Superman: The Man of Steel along with him. Nolan's brother Christopher is expected to only executive-produce, and not direct, the film. That said, he will be "hands-on" as a producer. Since the Superman film is under the gun because of the ongoing legal entanglements involving the property, Warner Bros. wants the pair to get started on their script on the double.

Our sources add that Warners is confident in the early work that Goyer and Jonah Nolan have done so far on Batman 3, and that as a result Superman has now taken on a higher priority status at the studio than it had since Superman Returns was released.

And keep in mind that in feature films, scriptwriters aren't treated as idea generators, but as hired contractors whose job is to carry out the ideas of the director and/or executives. So the elements that this project reportedly has in common with the previous one could be elements that originated with the studio execs -- stuff that they asked Singer to include in a second film and are now asking Nolan and Goyer to include in their version.

So, great, we should get this movie sometime in next 10 years and it'll end up not involving anyone currently asigned to it. ;)

I hope DC/WB doesn't fumble this one up. It's feaking Superman he should be on top!

Now, as much as I liked Reeves, hire an adult chiseled-jaw actor who looks like an acts like Superman instead of looking like a pretty boy playing dress-up.

Until I see an official trailer for "The Man Of Steel"...I am not going to get my hopes up.

Don't they have to produce a Superman movie before 2013 when the character rights revert to the Seigel foundation or whatever? Now that DC Ent has their new structure in place I wish they'd hurry up and make their announcements that they want to make.

All this talk about the Superman copyright is kinda silly... I mean seriously what are the Siegels and Schusters going to do? Sell the license to Marvel? Image? IDW? ARCHIE!?! They make no money unless there's something done with the character. I mean Stan Lee never said "Hey I want to keep the rights to Spider-Man after all. Maybe I might want to have DC do Spidey if I don't like what you're doing. Making a deal with the devil... poppy cock!"
