I just finished watching David Gerrold on the 7th Rule podcast with Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk. It's a fascinating conversation, and Gerrold is very frank about things that happened behind the scenes of both TOS and the early days of TNG. I highly recommend it if you're a fan of both shows.
Some bits of info that were new to me:
- Exactly what contributions Gerrold made in his rewrite of "I, Mudd"
- Gene Roddenberry actually FIRED Gene Coon from TOS, largely because he disliked the humorous elements Coon brought to the show.
- Gerrold wrote most of the scene in "Encounter at Farpoint" where Picard and Riker first meet.
- Gerrold also talks about Roddenberry's vengeful streak, where it wasn't enough for him to fire someone, he also had to badmouth them to try and ruin their career. This certainly adds more fuel to my personal theory that Roddenberry was "The Executive" that Grace Lee Whitney wrote about in her book The Longest Trek.
