David Fincher to direct 20k Leagues Under The Sea?

Other than the under appreciated Alien 3, Fincher has stayed pretty much firmly within the noir genre. His style and sensibilities I see as an odd match for this classic story. It could be all kinds of awesome...it could be a train wreck. But it will be interesting, I am sure.

Not at all. What Fincher does best is stories about obsession. Stories he can compare to his own obsessions. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is a perfect project for him!

Really excited! :D

This is fantastic news. It's about time we got an updated version of this classic tale.

That being said, I still wish he would do Rendezvous with Rama... :sigh:

I'm excited, there's never been a truly great screen version of this story.

The Disney version featured James Mason and had the breathtaking squid battle, but kind've floundered simply because it was so goofy and kid-friendly. Kirk Douglas and the songs....blech.....

A decade back I would've said that Fincher was one of my favourite directors; not so much these days. I actually fell asleep during Benjamin Button. Guy is in serious need of another interesting film, fingers crossed that this is it.

If there were an ADULT movie with the visuals from the Disney -- the divers' suits, the Nautilus, etc. -- it would be AWESOME.

Holy shit, come up with some new ideas already. At this rate, I could film two hours of me sitting at my computer writing posts like this, and it could have a shot of being box office gold simply because it'll be the one movie that isn't a remake/sequel/adaption and that'll make it unique.

"It's not a remake? Not a sequel? Not based on anything? Well what could it possibly be about?
"I don't know. Let's see it and find out."

Of course, since I wouldn't have any splosions, product placement or lens flares, it might be a very difficult film to market.

And to think I was going to go see Christopher Plummer on stage at the Stratford Festival playing Propsero in The Tempest.

Give it up, Christopher...it's been done!

^ So by your rationale, Lord of the Rings (adaptation, already filmed as a cartoon), The Godfather Part 2 (sequel, based on a book), The Dark Knight (sequel, one of many Batman movies), The Shawshank Redemption (adaptation), Ocean's 11 (remake) are all pointless?

What about THE WIZARD OF OZ, BEN-HUR, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, SCHINDLER'S LIST, JURASSIC PARK, JAWS, PSYCHO, REAR WINDOW, THE BIRDS, THE FLY, FORBIDDEN PLANET, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, LOGAN'S RUN, PLANET OF THE APES, and pretty much every classic film that was based on a book, play, or short story?

Hollywood has been in the remake and sequel business since the silent era. (There were at least three different versions of "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" in 1922 alone.) Complaining about Hollywood making remakes is kind of like complaining that the sun rises in the east or that the tide comes in. It's the nature of the beast.
