David Bowie appreciation thread

I'm one of the few people who thinks that Little Wonder is a really good track.

Add me to that small group because that's one of my favourite Bowie songs.

I'm a huge Bowie fan and have liked him ever since I was about 4 and my sister would put on the Glass Spider tour videos every morning (and I mean every morning). I have some great memories of me and my sister sitting in our dad's car driving to various businesses around the North West for whom he did book-keeping (mostly Chinese restaurants so we used to have a meal when we went, which was great!) and listening to songs like "Drive-in Saturday" and "Modern Love" and arguing over which songs to play next.

I'd have to say that "Station to Station" is probably my favourite Bowie album. Only half a dozen tracks but not a bad note on there.

I've only managed to see him live twice but each time he was outstanding and I would love to go a third time.

The guy has quite a diverse back-catalogue of styles and songs so depending on what mood I'm in I might go for a bit of glam-tastic Aladdin Sane or Ziggy Stardust or maybe go for a bit more of his more, avant garde albums like Heathen or Low or maybe a bit of lazy folk rock like Hunky Dory.

There is usually a Bowie era/album for any mood I might be in, which isn't something I get with most other artists.

Bowie fuckin' rocks. Makes everything more awesome (see: Zoolander, The Prestige).

Totally agree. When I heard the beginning of "Cat People" in Inglorious Basterds, I knew we were in for some really good s***! :techman:

I urge everyone to watch Bowie's rendition of "Heroes" from the 1985 Live Aid concert. It's mind-blowing!

I've always liked Bowie. I always found it interesting that, when I was a teenager in the '80s, Bowie always had a following among "new wavers" who loved "Ziggy Stardust" but wouldn't be caught dead listening to any other long-hair '70s rock. I think it was mostly his fashion sense that won them over.

He used to be very good at spotting the upcoming trends before anyone else and being on the cutting edge. He has put out a bunch of mediocre albums along the way, but then again so have Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones &c.

Is it on YouTube? There's a great live version up there, but it's much more recent.

Here's what I found on YouTube. I have it on DVD; the LiveAid concert is well worth buying!

Scary Monsters was my first Bowie CD - and man that was a great disk, especially with the Japanese version that was really frenetic and then the more mellow english version later.

I'm still trying to hunt down a Glass Spider tour CD, I've got the LP, but my record player's needle is kinda iffy and I would like a nice clean version to play on my MP3 with my good ear buds.

Well, there's this...but apparently it's out-of-print, so the available copies are a little pricey. The CDs that go with the DVD are great, though: there are some songs (like "All the Madmen" and "Scary Monsters") that aren't on the live DVD...so I definitely recommend trying to track down a copy.

^I saw Bowie on that tour, and I'll always remember the rendition of All The Madmen as he was standing on one leg on a high gantry all the way through the song. Unfortunately he didn't do Time wearing the angel wings as seen on the video. Dammit.

:D

Anyone know about any new album any time soon? His web site is still set up to promote Reality. I keep hearing rumours, but nothing comes of them.

I believe this is the longest Bowie's ever gone without new material. I suppose it's to be expected as he gets older, but still...

Anyone ever hear the early Bowie single "The Little Bomardier"? You'd never know it was him.

I've met Spiders From Mars bassist Trevor Bolder.

Bowie's in semi-retirement from what I hear - he's announced no new projects and even turned down the chance to work on a project with Peter Gabriel on one track, apparently saying that he's not doing music right now. As much as I love Reality, I'd hate to think it's the last we'll ever hear from him. :(

^LOVE "Jump They Say."

Also love:
Life on Mars
Ashes to Ashes
Cat People (putting out fire)
Rebel Rebel
Fashion
Heroes
This is Not America
Young Americans
Jean Genie
Let's Dance

..and about a dozen others I'll think of as soon as I hit "Post Quick Reply."
In addition,
Fame (he was groomed as the next John Lennon and got Lennon on this track)
Life on Mars
Sufragette City
Ziggy Stardust
Space Oddity (where we met Major Tom)
Let's Dance (The Thin White Duke introduces the world to SRV)
I could go on....but he is also the reason Johnny Rotten became a rocker...and we also have to thank him for Iggy
In addition to these, Rock'n'Roll Suicide, Aladdin Sane (= a lad insane) and The Man Who Sold the World are among my favorites. And I can't help loving Absolute Beginners. :)

Se7en creeped the shit out of me (in the good way) when I first saw it in cinema - it is such a strong movie - but Bowie's Heart's Filthy Lesson in the closing credits still managed to additionally creep me out and was the crowning glory. :bolian:

You should listen to the Bowie/Slick track "Isn't it Evening?" from Earl Slick's album Zig Zag from a few years ago. You'll find it on YouTube. I fell in love with it the minute I heard it!!
