David Bowie appreciation thread

Who else thinks that David Bowie is awesome? He always has top-notch musicians (particularly the guitar gods Mick Ronson and Stevie Ray Vaughan). His music is definitely sci-fi..especially in the Ziggy days, and everything he touches just exhudes class and grace.

I fucking love Bowie. :techman: He's weird in all the right ways, a great singer, and he's written some incredible music.

I swear to god, Bowie has got to be, like, the unofficial official music artist of my college. There are Bowie fans EVERYWHERE. (Doctor Who would be the unofficial official TV show on campus)

I like him. I don't know if I can call myself a real fan.

Bowie is probably my favourite all time musical artist.

If only he didn't give up on the Nathan Adler Diaries... :(

I've actually been listening to Low a lot recently.

I love Bowie---coolest man on the planet. I got his Greatest Hits collection the Christmas before last and most of it is now on my MP3 player.

The man is a god. A very, very strange god, but a god nonetheless.

^LOVE "Jump They Say."

Also love:
Life on Mars
Ashes to Ashes
Cat People (putting out fire)
Rebel Rebel
Fashion
Heroes
This is Not America
Young Americans
Jean Genie
Let's Dance

..and about a dozen others I'll think of as soon as I hit "Post Quick Reply."

In addition,
Fame (he was groomed as the next John Lennon and got Lennon on this track)
Life on Mars
Sufragette City
Ziggy Stardust
Space Oddity (where we met Major Tom)
Let's Dance (The Thin White Duke introduces the world to SRV)
I could go on....but he is also the reason Johnny Rotten became a rocker...and we also have to thank him for Iggy

I remember discussing his latest record with a schoolfriend when I was eight years old (Diamond Dogs, BTW). That's how long I've been a fan. And I saw him live in the late 80's. Many awesomes.

:D

I don't like to listen to his albums, I don't know why but I've seen him live twice and I did enjoy it a lot.
Actually, Life on Mars is one of my best live moment, you could feel everyone in the crowd shivering at the same moment :)

I've been a fan of Bowie since I was a just a little kid - maybe 3 years old or younger. It was definitely around his "Thin White Duke" era - shortly before Labyrinth came out. I couldn't get enough David Bowie. My folks had the Glass Spider Record which I listened to often, we taped the Glass Spider concert which I watched a lot. Hell I think I started wearing suits A LOT as a kid because of Bowie - who at the time wore suits a lot. I thought they were cool.

And as an adult I've got most of his library in MP3 format (gotta love eMusic subscriptions) - but Changesbowie was the tape that was in my walkman the most when I was in grade school and beyond. It wasn't until after high school that I discovered the more current stuff and while there is some of his newer stuff I'm not as crazy about, its still in rotation on my MP3 player. I have to agree, Outside is a very different concept album. I prefer it to Earthling. Although I did really enjoy Heathen. And Reality went with me on a road trip. I think Reality was the last time that AOL really promoted a Bowie album, I didn't know about Outside until only a year or two ago - and outside came out in 2004! Very underrated album - I can see why it didn't get a lot of commercial appeal, the little "snippets" from the Nathan Adler diary were different. Although what was cool was, by the time I got that album - I was living near an Adler park on Adler Street. So it was kind of cool to listen to that while walking my dog there.

I think the really cool thing about Bowie is that he never just stayed the same way. You could like certain eras and be considered a fan. There are at least 4 maybe five distinct "Eras" that you could put him in. His late 60s/70s era, the 80s, the 90s, the 21st Century. Each era was far different from the last.

Outside came out in 1995. I was obsessed with that album for years, and saw his show promoting the album in Toronto with Nine Inch Nails. The only problem with that show was that Outside was a concept album, and the show was a concept show to go with that...but the concert was a week before the album came out. The audience was a little lost at times.

I think Heathen is the best album Bowie's done since Outside. It's a wonderful record. It's got this weird sort of pop jazz lounge feel to it. I love it.
