David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away.

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Huh...that's unexpected.

That's a lot of Star Wars for the foreseeable future. But I guess if we haven't hit superhero fatigue yet (despite dire predictions for the better half of a decade), I suppose that won't happen for Star Wars, too.

Weiss hasn't written screenplays before, but Benioff help write the gods awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine and mediocre Troy. On the other hand, he did write 25th Hour, so it could go either way.

Also, hopefully this means that if they're going to be busy working on these films, they won't be doing Confederate anymore.

I don't mind more films, but I'd rather they wait to announce them once there are more details.

I'm happy this is not related to the Skywalker saga.

A part of me suspects they are developing lots of Star Wars properties, but not all will make it to the screen.
How many hours of a live action Star Wars get written before they decided not to go forward with it?

It's the Writers Roomization of the film franchise....

OK, wow this is very unexpected. GOT is a good show, but I'm honestly not sure how much of the source material and how much of that is Benioff and Weiss.
I'm curious exactly how many movies this is going to be since they said "series of movies" rather than trilogy.

Prof. Zoom brings up a good point, just because they're developing it doesn't mean it'll actually get made.

I just want my damn Obi Wan stand alone...........I am guessing they might start dropping 2 a year

David Benioff trains in my local gym when In Belfast making GOT. I’ve always respected his privacy and left him alone, despite the fact that I’m a big GOT fan.

That may now change...

Bob Iger also announced LucasFilm is making more then one TV series for the Disney streaming service

Other than a few scenes (that they themselves didn't write) I can't think of anything in the books that got better from their translation, and a lot that got worse (often for no reason other than to change it).

I'm starting to feel very doom and gloomy about the future of the franchise.

that's pretty much the direction it will go in my estimation. the GoT-ization of the franchise is imminent. No more SW made for 12-year olds.

I'm not worried about them telling stories for "more sophisticated" audiences, I'm worried that they just aren't that good at writing in general. Benioff wrote a couple pretty good books more than a decade ago and has been coasting on them since.

As Yoda might say "Oversaturated I fear this franchise will become."
As of now, it will still only be 1 film a year. The sequel trilogy will be finished and there are no plans for any stand-alone films during this time.

So alternating trilogies perhaps? This two won't be available until sometime in 2019. Episode IX comes in December of that year (supposedly). There are still rumors of a third Anthology film for 2020, an then whatever these guys and Johnson have in mind?

I've seen nothing about another trilogy. The only movies planned are IX in 2019 and then the Rian trilogy and the B&W series (we have no idea how many movies it will be) some time in 2020 or later. I'm thinking we get the first Rian film in 2020 with the B&W flick in 2021.
