Davey Jones, partial inspiration for Ens. Chekov, dies at 66

Requiescat in pace Davy

Mickey Dolenz sang lead in both of those, not Davy Jones.

Well, Davy played a mean maraca.

Seriously, Davy sang lead on a fair amount of Monkee songs, like the ones people have named (the excellent I Wanna Be Free and Daydream Believer) and many others (Valleri, Cuddly Toy, and The Day We Fell in Love, the absolutely mushiest, treacliest song ever). Micky sang lead on a lot of their songs, too, and Mike and Peter on a few of them.

Davy, thanks for adding so much to my childhood, adolescence, and actually, my whole life. RIP, Isis

British performer Davey Jones of THE MONKEES fame just died of a heart attack. He was 66 years old.

For those of you too young to remember, THE MONKEES were a fixture of 1970's syndicated TV reruns, much like TOS. The show ran on NBC from Sept. '66 to March '68... in prime time, believe it or not. And Davey Jones made such a splash that Gene Roddenberry recruited Walter Koenig to play Ensign Checkov in '67 to give TOS some youth appeal. (This included Koenig wearing a wig until his hair grew out to look like Jones.)

I never knew that. Amazing fact

Now, now! Didn't Roddenberry already set you guys straight on this a long time ago? Chekov was not added to the show to cash in on the Davy Jones craze! He was added as a salute to the Russian space program!

What? The wig? Oh...well, that was just an homage to those big, furry hats the Cossacks used to wear! :D

I'd like to create a list of the "Chekov wig" eps.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm doing this from memory (eps where Koenig's hair looks funky). Here goes:

Catspaw
Amok Time
Who Mourns for Adonais?
The Apple (not 100% sure on this one)
Friday's Child

Missing any?

I wonder if he'd been having cardiac problems. They were going to do a tour late last year, and then canceled it.
He had "shortness of breath problems." Fox News showed a piece of a small concert he did just two days before his death. So he was still performing for audiences.

:borg:

The Bio Channel re-aired their 1 hour episode of Davy Jones the day after his death. Near the end of the episode Davy Jones states that just before he hits the stage to perform he drinks a Red Bull and ginseng (which are both stimulants). Between the stimulants and the adrenaline rush created before performing at his age (66 years old) he may have over done it once too many times.

Over the weekend I saw an interview of Micky Dolenz on CNN and he said that he was surprised Davy died because Davy was the youngest of the 4 of them (The Monkees) and Davy was a vegetarian, whereas Mickey admitted he himself was not a vegetarian. Micky also stated that he just finished touring with Davey and Peter Tork a few months ago last year (actually it was 7 months ago, in August 2011).

I remember reading online recently that the Monkees did cancel their concert tour last year near the end of the tour because Management booked some additional dates at venues without the Monkees permission. Here is a link about it.

Rest in peace Mr. Jones,

Navigator NCC-2120 USS Entente
