Davey Jones, partial inspiration for Ens. Chekov, dies at 66

British performer Davey Jones of THE MONKEES fame just died of a heart attack. He was 66 years old.

For those of you too young to remember, THE MONKEES were a fixture of 1970's syndicated TV reruns, much like TOS. The show ran on NBC from Sept. '66 to March '68... in prime time, believe it or not. And Davey Jones made such a splash that Gene Roddenberry recruited Walter Koenig to play Ensign Checkov in '67 to give TOS some youth appeal. (This included Koenig wearing a wig until his hair grew out to look like Jones.)

Aww. Him and Cassidy from the Partridge family were the thing, cast out of the same mold. The teen age heart throbs. Now there are only three Monkeys left.
How's Leif Garrett doing btw?

The wig thing is what gets me to chuckle. Yes, folks, if you look at "Friday's Child", "Catspaw" and "Who Mourns for Adonais?", Walter Koenig is wearing a wig to give TOS a shot of Davey Jones-style youth appeal.

Does anyone know which ep marks when Koenig stopped wearing the wig?

He only wore it for a few episodes, I believe, as his hair was very short and it needed to grow in. Not sure which was the last.

Sad to see him pass away so young. God's speed Davy Jones

I remember him on that Brady Bunch episode as well as on The Monkees

Bummer...

I didn't really care for "The Monkees" all that much, but of all the guys on that show I liked Davy Jones the best. He was such a personable 60's era celebrity.

I wonder if he'd been having cardiac problems. They were going to do a tour late last year, and then canceled it.

I have the 45 of Daydream Believer my aunt gave me about 1972. Played it last night. One of my favorite records ever.

Requiescat in pace Davy

He had "shortness of breath problems." Fox News showed a piece of a small concert he did just two days before his death. So he was still performing for audiences.
