Well, according to the movies it seems that everyone is still doing pretty much what they were doing in the other universe. For example, they met Mudd and seized his ship, likely because he was engaged in some illegal activity.

Not entirely. If you'll remember, James Tiberius Kirk is a different young man from his Prime counterpart. Uhura is stronger in the Kelvinverse timeline. I love that she tells Captain Kirk to let her do her job in STID. I love the Prime Universe Nyota Uhura, but I love that the Kelvinverse makes her a more well-rounded person.
But back to Data... who is to say that the path of Arik and Noonien Soong aren't heavily altered in the Kelvinverse? So Data might not ever be built.

I'd be curious to know if the variant is because there are different ways to pronounce it in Swahili or if the writers weren't aware of the proper pronunciation initially.
