Data's death

The other interesting thing about Soong androids: when the android goes bad, the memory isn't just wiped to start again, they build a whole new android. Lore was disassembled by Soong when he became a threat to the colonists, and Data was built. The B-4 didn't work, and was disassembled.

Seems like a waste of materials, making new arms, legs, hands, etc., unless the "personality" is intrinsically part of the whole and not just stored in the memory chips.

We can only assume Soong never heard of prasticing the three Rs.

What surprises me is why all the Soong models are made in Soong's image? Brent Spiner said he want to end playing Data. One of the ways to do this with a dramatic flare is to allow Data to perform the ultimate selfless act. IMO I still think if B-4 was performed by a different actor, it would give Spiner and Data a perfect out. Instead B-4 will continue in the Nemesis aftermath novels.

^^Might help to clarify what film it is you're talking about. I think the only time Stallone thought about killing Rocky was in part V, but then he had a change of heart becuase and I quote "It'd be like killing Superman."

Rocky was supposed to die at the end of Rocky Balboa, I think several endings where shot because they didn't know which one to go with (Rocky wining, Rocky losing, a draw, Rocky dying.)

I was told someone might die but avoided actual spoilers and thought it was just hype.....they won't kill off a main guy from TNG.......
so yes I was shocked when I saw it on it's first night alothugh I wasn't shocked when B4 started to hsow signs of Data's memory.

Ooh good point. Perhaps that is why so many people feel 'meh' about Data's death in the first place? Within 10 minutes of the death, hey look they've given us an 'out' that could bring him back. There isn't any sense of loss if you know the character could be back in the next movie (obviously not now but you get my drift!).

Exactly. I'm one of those that actually thinks that nemesis isn't a bad movie altogether (although I cringe at the TWOKish parts) but all in all a good film. The only bit that lets me down is the end bit with B4. It just takes the edge off of what had just happened with Data.

I went to see NEM on opening night with high hopes. And like many of you, throughout the movie I was dissapointed. Not so much with stuff that was "out of character" (I can usually rationalize that away with...the characters have grown and changed) but with it being derivative of TWOK from start to finish. However.......

I was vigilant in avoiding spoilers for the movie before it opened. I loved visiting these forums, but would not go in the pre-release-Nem threads or even look at their titles. I did not want to hear about the movie ahead of time.

And I was shocked when Data died. When he said "Goodbye" and the ship blew up, I literally sat there with my jaw dropped and eyeballs wide open. I had no clue that was going to happen, and the shock made a significant impact on me.

Is there ANYONE who didn't hear rumors of this before they saw the film and who were as surprised as I was?

I also tried to get away from spoilers. All I knew going in was that Shinzon was a clone and that Picard or Data would die. Still, all the action leading up to it really caused it to give a shock. Knew it was coming, just didn't realize until it happened that it was happening. :)

I liked the movie and thought it was a good ending.

I didn't know he was going to die, but I didn't really care as his replacement was already there in the story, so it was obviously going to be a get-out to not have Data really gone.
