Data will get his wish?

BorgTheory

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I have a theory. I think Data will be seen again at the end of the season. He will be revived as a full on synth - which is indistinguishable from a human. He becomes human.

Stewart wanted this show to MEAN something that aligns with his personal values. He hates (the now passed Brexit) hates domestic violence, hates that illegal aliens/undocumented immigrants are held in cages at the border, etc.

That plays with the fact for years in Star Trek it has played with “what does it mean to be human” and Data was and is a huge part of that. Stewart loathes how they are being treated on the border when they reach the USA and feels they are being treated as sub-human.

So we have a show dealing with this in respect to Data, Synths, and Rios with his holograms. How often did the Voyager crew forget the Doctor was a hologram before they caught themselves. A lot. The longer he was with them the more human he became.

Do holograms have the same rights as humans if they are like or more advanced than the Doctor? What about Synths? Reclaimed Borg?

As a result I think the show will play with the ethics regarding reviving Data as a synth. His old body was destroyed. He can only come back as a synth and Maddox creates a way to do this with one of the mystical positronic molecules.

I could see the finale reveal Data to come out of some pod of some sort to Picards shock, only to have his hopes dashed as Data is being controlled by a hidden enemy, perhaps Maddox, Lore, or Commodore Oh.

Corrupted synth Data then goes ahead and revives the Borg Cube to dramatic music as Picard looks in horror. The screen begins to fade out as Corrupted synth Data says “Resistance is futile” to Picard as horrific screams and disruptor shots echo out from the deepest parts of the Borg Cube.

“To be continued in 2020”

The show teased resurrecting Data in the first episode, when they said all they need is a single positron to do it. I predict we'll meet him (played by a de-aged but human looking Brent Spiner) in episode 10.

But I don't think he'll be corrupted or evil.

I have had this idea as well of Data in essence coming back to life but I think it will be more like "AI" in that he can only come back for a day or a short moment. Basically a chance to see his daughter and a chance for Picard to give him a proper goodbye before his programing dies for good. I don't think they will completely erase his death with what would be a cheap happy ending. It's got to be bittersweet at best. In fact in my head the final scene in Season 1 is Picard and Data playing Poker again like in the first scene only real now and for the first time in along time but also the last time. Maybe even on a recreation of the Enterprise via holodeck. Would love them to even use the same props and lighting and recreate the TNG look exactly or as close as you can seeing as how much time has passed. When the game ends, Data dies.

HÆ?

I think that Data will come back indirectly, in the form of a Soji who may recover many of his memories (at least) within herself. There is precedent for this: Data did, after the death of Lal, import her memories into his own mind. Would it not be fitting if Data, in turn, lived in through his child?

I am increasingly skeptical of the idea that Data will manifest in his physical form, at least for any extended period of time. If nothing else, Brent Spiner is in his 70s: It cannot be sustained for long. Isa Briones, in contrast, is in her early 20s. If there is to be a future for Soong-type-adjacent androids in Trek, I suspect she will take up the torch.

I had very similar thoughts - that he’d be back as either a flesh and blood synth or in the B4 body with some upgrades. Wouldn’t want to see him being controlled or anything though.

Star Trek Picard: The Search for Data

If well written Data returning could work. As a Data fan I’d love to see him, but I’m happy just to have him in Picard’s dreams if it means a stronger story.

An idea I had had before learning B-4's status in the show was that he'd be around, still repeating "Never saw the sun" and doing generally nothing. Even though he's been scanned and studied, there's been no success in resurrecting Data's consciousness, and scans have detected that even if they did somehow manage to do so, Data's consciousness asserting full control would be too much for B-4, and would cause him to fatally short out. Then in the finale, Picard is locked in a fight to the death with the villain, with B-4 sitting there still repeating "never saw the sun." Then, B-4 suddenly stops midsentence, jerks his head around, notices Picard in trouble, goes over and very quickly throttles the bad guy into submission and knocks him out. B-4 then starts freezing up, drops to his knees with sparks flying. Picard would very concernedly say "B-4...?" B-4 would then turn his head to Picard and in Data's voice we would hear him say "Goodbye, Captain" before a greater shower of sparks erupts from his body and he collapses facedown. Picard would then gasp "Data..."

I thought it could have been a beautiful moment. Sadly we can't get it now.

I think this is all about Data's legacy...not about literally resurrecting him.

I agree. That is why I think a resurrection would only be used in essence for Picard to say goodbye to him or for his daughter to meet him at least once. Bringing him back and then he goes back to being in Starfleet and then the old gang gets together every once in awhile for Poker games would be a very bad way to end the season. It would be to fan fictiony. Data coming back would sort of be the coda and then Picard would realize that he now has to move on. I think the second season could him getting to know the other daughter much better. I don't think they are going to meet until the near end of the season.

It's certainly raised as a possibility. They explicitly said Bruce Maddox thought he could reconstitute him. And it'd be a clever end-around Brent Spiner's aging, Data actually ages now.

Considering the darker tone of Picard and its goal as a reflection of modern society, i wouldn't be surprised if data, somehow back and given the choice, said "After observing for years the cruelty that humans are capable of, perhaps my desire to be human is a mistake." That might be the darkest social commentary the Picard show could pull.

Data rejecting humanity and going with who? Zhat Vash? The Borg? Romulans? Synths?

God, I just don't want Data back. He was in 178 episodes and four movies, gave his life for his captain and friend (which was an incredibly human final act), allow the character to move on. I don't need to constantly wallow in the past.

I'm curious about the mystery surrounding Data having two android daughters and how the story unfolds in future episodes. I'd be glad if they brought him back in an interesting way for the series. He's one of my favorite characters from TNG.

But that is kind of what the show is about. Characters trying to overcome past mistakes and past trauma, especially Picard and his trauma is partly connected to Data dying.
