Data would play by logic, Troi would play by ear. Sometimes, you just get lucky. I remember once in the fourth grade, I played a game of chess with a friend, moved my pieces COMPLETELY at random, and wound up checkmating him without either of us losing a piece. I have no idea how it happened, but I distinctly remember it happening.
