Data battle

One could get some notion by looking at some of the depictions of 8472 encounters with individual Borg, given that they are comparable in strength (Data is stronger by a fair bit, as you can see from his arm wrestling Locutus in BOBY and the way he manhandles them in 'Descent', but not dominating, as can be seen in how they got the drop on him in 'First Contact'). It's been a while since I've seen the relevant Voyager episodes, but I do believe it was not pretty, though.

That said, Data's reaction time and reflexes even without invoking 'high speed' is still far above the Borg as ever depicted and above any organic being shown, so he may prove a match to a single 8472 alien, but I wouldn't call it a sure thing by any means, and I would have severe doubts of his ability to take on more than one...

Just my 2 cents.

Is there going to be a separate thread for any adversary Data could possibly come up against?

If so, count me out.

Oh be nice people. We're all nerds here, if of varying genre's.

Data vs 8472? I'd give 3:2 odds in favor of 8472 in Vegas.

As previously stated the Borg are the common reference. 8472 dominated while Data only beat them and was able to be overwhelmed at times. Data gets a bonus for not being suspectable to it's killer DNA whatever though.

This of course assumes Data doesn't have plot shields protecting him.

I recall an 8472 alien going up against 2 Borg drones, but no more than that at one time. It easily knocked the drones to the ground with a swipe of its arm, but couldn't Data do the same?

Presumably 8472 would tire eventually, and it can feel pain. Data is not susceptible to either.

Are you saying that 8472 is stronger than Data?

FWIW, it would appear that the modular-constructed Data can survive the breaking off of limbs, which goes a bit beyond merely tolerating pain. Removing limbs from a Species 8472 mantis would result not only in the functional loss of the limb in question, but probably also in bleeding and various internal responses affecting circulation (which the Species does appear to have) and other body functions, ultimately to the detriment of the beast's fighting ability.

Now, we never saw Data breaking off limbs (although this was originally supposed to be shown when he and Worf recovered Locutus in "BoBW II"). But he has demonstrated mechanical strength that ought to suffice for the trick. Probably a good way to fight a 8472 whose assault technique involves offering various limbs for mauling...
