News Darth Vader actor David Prowse has passed away.

I met Dave Prowse at a scifi con in Plano, Texas shortly before Episode III came out in theaters. After getting my autograph on an 8x10 from A New Hope (where he is pointing a finger at Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia), the scout trouper cosplayer in line behind me was going to take our picture. Mr. Prowse remained seated, understandably, and I was standing next to him. The cosplayer said he couldn't fit us both in the frame, and Mr. Prowse looks at me sideways and says, "Kneel down." And without even thinking, I took a knee next to Darth Vader, forever proving I'm of a weaker will than Luke Skywalker.

I know some people might say he was only in the suit. But acting with your body, projecting feelings and emotions through bodylanguage is a very difficult form of acting and it was the combination of his bodywork with the voice-acting of James Earl Jones that brought about one of the most menacing villians we ever saw.

Indeed, I was thinking about that today when I heard the news and he did a good job as the physical presence of the character.
Over on Facebook, Adam-Troy Castro recounts the time that David Prowse threatened to flatten Harlan Ellison. He doesn't go into great detail, but it still makes me giggle to think of Harlan Ellison getting force choked by Darth Vader.

Very sad news. A lot of people make a big deal about James Earl Jones voice, but no matter how impressive Jones voice was, the character would not have worked nearly as well if it weren't Prowse physicality. In a live action production an impressive voice can only get you so far, you need to physical presence to match it, and that was exactly what Prowse provided.
No one better demonstrated the importance of standing tall even when you don't stand out.
Indeed, he was as much Darth Vader as Mr Earl Jones was.
When I heard the news from my brother, I thought the same.
Another childhood hero has left us. And in the UK that is doubled by the character of the Green Cross Code man that he played in TV ads, teaching children about crossing the road safely. He was very proud of that work.
RIP Mr Prowse. Condolences to his family and friends.

I read that he was banned from attending official conventions in 2010. Anyone know why?
I was thinking that too. The bodylanguage was key in the performance. Often I had thought of the presence he gave Vader because of his size but his movements added so much more than he was given credit for.
