Dark Matter - new comic by Stargate writers and possible a new tv show

46379.1

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
A new comic by former Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe writers and producers Joseph Mallozi and Paul Mullie debuts this January called Dark Matter.

http://www.darkhorse.com/Comics/18-060/DARK-MATTER-1-of-4
A derelict ship floats in space, its troubled crew awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board. Their search for answers triggers the vessel's deadly security system: a relentless android bent on their destruction. Facing threats at every turn, they have to work together to survive a voyage charged with vengeance, redemption, betrayals, and hidden secrets best left unknown.

The interesting part to me
According Mallozzi's blog, "...the plan is to use it as a springboard to a television series"

What do you think about the premise? I actually thinks it sounds pretty generic but I like their work on Stargate so I'll be keeping an eye on this.

And as always, a possible space opera sci-fi show is always interesting.

Another comic thats probably going to be canceled in 24 issues.

Re: Dark Matter - new comic by Stargate writers and possible a new tv

^ Probably less than that. Not really interested in the premise after reading the interview they did with I think Newsarama.

Re: Dark Matter - new comic by Stargate writers and possible a new tv

The premise sounds interesting. The writers behind it, considerably less so. If it ever goes to series, no doubt it will be mediocre and unimaginative, just like all the Stargate series were.

Here's the aforementioned Newsarama interview: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/dark-matter-dark-horse-interview-111121.html

I'll give it a chance -- particularly if it has any shot of making it to TV (someone is bound to give the space opera another shot in the near future...). I didn't like the earlier incarnations of SG at all, but I found SGU to be reasonably enjoyable.

Re: Dark Matter - new comic by Stargate writers and possible a new tv

Sounds sorta like the Grebulons from Mostly Harmless.

Re: Dark Matter - new comic by Stargate writers and possible a new tv

These bozos were Stargate's worst writers by far.

Re: Dark Matter - new comic by Stargate writers and possible a new tv

It sounds like they had a few SGU script ideas to burn. Unfortunately, they forgot the actual burning part.

Other way around according to another interview. The story for Dark Matter came before SGU.

They've written many episodes, of course there's been misses, but overall I like their work

Robert Hewitt Wolfe's proposal or Blood & Chrome are more likely to be first. Or maybe Falling Skies will morph into an space story, the way they've been going with it...

Sounds like SGU to me. Other than the sleeping crew, it sounds like SGU first two seasons, which ended with the Crew asleep, so, could easily be S3 SGU.

Wasn't this the general idea of the movie Pandorum?

Of course, but RHW's project and B&C are in no way guaranteed to ever make it to series (as you're well aware). Dark Matter obviously faces even longer odds, but it is another project to keep in mind.

There is obviously a space opera void at the moment. If Syfy doesn't step in to fill it soon, someone else will. I wouldn't be completely shocked if Science decides to take a shot at an original sci-fi show and perhaps even a space opera -- they are getting more into scripted television and are rumored to be looking at ideas to make their first original scripted show. They'd likely be looking for something that would really put them on the map, and as such, might be willing to spend a good chunk of change on the project.

Tough crowd.

Don't worry our armchairs writers on this forum all whine but they will all be watching the premiere if it ever comes out. Many of them will still whine here but will watch the whole series up to the very end.

I for myself just happy that some space based sci-fi shows are in the pipes. Even if it's just at his infancy now. I will also watch it but at least I will wait up until then before making an opinion about it (maybe it's because I love space sci-fi shows). I like those writers. I hope the tone will be a bit more serious than SG1 and Atlantis but not as soap opera-ish as the SGU was. More adventure, more sci-fi topics, more actions, more explorations of planets and civilizations.

It's all about personal taste anyway...and the damn ratings!!

You speak the truth... :)

Anyway, the basic concept has potential. It's all about the execution.

Re: Dark Matter - new comic by Stargate writers and possible a new tv

I plan to watch the first episode (maybe the first 15 minutes) and kick it to the curb. :rommie: I only do the watch-and-whine routine for Star Trek, dammit! (Or anything with a hot guy in the lead such as Joe Flanigan.)

...but this particular series will never see the light of day. Neither will Blood & Chrome. Robert Hewitt Wolfe is our only hope.

I think Blood & Chrome has a considerably better shot (albeit still very much a long shot), considering there is an actual 2-hour backdoor pilot that Syfy spent $4 millions on and actually produced.

RHW's project may never get further than him turning in a pilot script, which wouldn't be at all unusual.

Plus, even with Caprica's failure, selling a new BSG would likely be considered much easier than trying to promote an entirely new franchise.

Re: Dark Matter - new comic by Stargate writers and possible a new tv

Never been a big Stargate fan, but it's a decent premise for a show's... pilot episode, or first few shows or possibly season. Anmesia or not, people are gonna figure out something about what their starship is and what their mission was probably about. And then what's the show about?

Blood & Chrome has a pilot episode that's been suspiciously buried for ages, last news I heard suggested Sci-Fi has no plans following it up... DOA, for all intents and purposes. RHW's vague pitch has more potential simply in the sense it may actually result in a series (though of course it may result in nothing too).

Or maybe Falling Skies will morph into an space story, the way they've been going with it...
It's possible we'll see an alien planet or something, but I got a feeling it'll remain relatively earthborne.
